Dr. Georgios (George) P. Georgiou recognised for outstanding scientific achievements in linguistics
The University of Nicosia proudly announces that Dr. Georgios (George) P. Georgiou, Assistant Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Languages and Literature (School of Humanities and Social Sciences), has been elected as a Fellow of the Young Academy of Europe (YAE). This prestigious recognition is awarded in acknowledgement of his outstanding scientific achievements.
The Young Academy of Europe, established in 2012, is a pan-European nongovernmental academy comprising top young scientists and scholars. The Academy aims to provide a “younger” perspective on the future of science and academia in Europe and collaborates with other esteemed academies, such as the Academia Europaea.
The elected Fellows of the YAE are young scientists who meet the following criteria:
- They are outstanding researchers with recognised excellence at both national and international levels.
- They demonstrate an interest in science and science policy at the European level.
- They exhibit leadership skills through coordinating research programmes/research teams or successfully supervising doctoral students.
- They conduct research within the European Union.
- They have obtained their doctoral degree within the last 12 years.
Currently, the YAE has 177 members on tenure, two of whom work in Cypriot public universities. Dr. Georgiou is the first Cypriot linguist to be elected as a Fellow of this academy.
About Dr. George Georgiou
Dr. Georgiou is the founder and Director of the Phonetic Lab at the University of Nicosia. He has been awarded the prestigious Cyprus Research Award – Young Researcher 2023 in the thematic area of Social Sciences and Humanities by the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation, in recognition of his outstanding research and academic profile.
He received a BA in Greek Philology (2007-2011), an MA in Education (2011-2013) with distinction, and a PhD in Linguistics (2014-2018) with distinction from the University of Cyprus. During his studies, he received MA and PhD scholarships from the Cyprus State Scholarship Foundation. He has also worked as a postdoctoral researcher at RUDN University (2018-2020) and the Cyprus University of Technology (2021).
Dr. Georgiou’s research interests include speech and language acquisition, cognitive processing, communication disorders, and machine learning. Between 2018 and 2024, he published more than 40 articles in high-indexed peer-reviewed journals, as well as monographs, edited volumes, book chapters, and conference proceedings. He has presented papers at over 70 conferences worldwide. He has secured several research grants as a Principal Investigator, with the latest being the research project “Diagnosis of Communication and Neurological Disorders Based on Speech Elements,” funded with 60,000 euros by the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation.
