University of Nicosia Research on AI and Small Claims Justice Presented at REDA2025

Dr. Nicolas Kyriakides, Director of the Procedural Law Unit at the University of Nicosia, presented the Unit’s latest research at the international conference REDA2025: Regulation and Enforcement in the Digital Era, which recently took place in Nicosia. The conference, co-organised by European University Cyprus and the University of Cyprus, brought together leading experts to discuss legal challenges in the digital age.

Dr. Kyriakides participated in a panel titled “AI as a Decision Maker & AI Liability”, which examined the role of artificial intelligence in legal decision-making and the implications for liability and accountability. The session featured a distinguished panel of legal professionals, including, Mr. George Christofides (Orphanides, Christofides & Co.) and Dr. Evangelia-Elina Asimakopoulou (Neapolis University). The panel was chaired by Mr. Yiannos Georgiades (Y. Georgiades & Associates).

Dr. Kyriakides presented the Unit’s latest research project, “Public Perception of Rapid Preliminary Adjudication in Small Claims”, which explores how the general public in England and Wales, Germany and Cyprus perceives the fairness, efficiency and trustworthiness of AI-assisted adjudication in small claims procedures. The study identifies key differences and shared challenges across jurisdictions, offering valuable insight into the future of access to justice in an increasingly digitised legal environment.
