High Commissioner of India to Cyprus Mr Manish and Rector Pouyioutas Signed an MoU During the Visit of Prime Minister Modi to Cyprus
Mr Manish, High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, and Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, Rector of the University of Nicosia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Sunday, 15 June 2025, for the establishment of a Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Nicosia. The post will be the first Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Chair hosted by a University in Cyprus and will be jointly supported by the University of Nicosia and ICCR.
The signing ceremony took place at the Park Lane Hotel in Limassol, immediately before the “Cyprus–India Roundtable Discussion: Advancing Strategic Economic Partnership”, attended by President Nikos Christodoulides and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Cyprus highlighted the strong diplomatic, cultural, and economic ties that link Cyprus and India—ties grounded in shared values of democracy, pluralism, and respect for human rights.
During the ceremony, High Commissioner Manish outlined the next steps, explaining that ICCR and the University of Nicosia will jointly select the Chair Inaugural Professor. Rector Pouyioutas expressed gratitude for the partnership and noted that the Chair will provide to the University of Nicosia community, but also to the citizens of Cyprus, a window to the rich culture and civilisation of India, thus further strengthening the ties between the peoples of the two countries.
