The University of Limassol is pleased to announce the participation of its Director, Dr. Afxentis Afxentiou, in a highly impactful study visit to the Robotics Innovation Center (RIC) at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Bremen, Germany, from October 14-17, 2024. The visit, sponsored by the EU-funded project NCP_WIDERA.NET under Horizon Europe, aimed to foster collaboration and knowledge exchange between leading research institutions and widening countries like Cyprus.
DFKI, one of the world’s foremost research institutes in artificial intelligence, leads groundbreaking work in robotics, developing intelligent systems for diverse applications including underwater, space, healthcare, and industrial robotics. The Robotics Innovation Center (RIC) in particular is known for its interdisciplinary approach, bringing together experts in fields such as computer science, engineering, biology, and physics to advance long-term autonomy and human-centred interaction in robotics.
This visit provided a strategic opportunity for the University of Limassol to establish ties with a global leader in AI, exploring potential collaborations in cutting-edge fields such as quantum computing, robotics learning, and cognitive systems. These areas are crucial for the university’s ambitions to enhance its research capabilities and contribute to the regional Research & Innovation ecosystem.
Through initiatives like this, UoL is actively working to integrate international best practises, while promoting innovation-driven growth in Cyprus. The study visit lays the groundwork for future joint projects and strengthens the university’s role as a key player in advancing AI and robotics research Cyprus and the broader region.
