The Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, Ms. Irini Loizidou Nicolaidou, the Executive Director of the University of Limassol, Ms. Ioanna Panayiotou, and the Secretary General of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Philokypros Rousounides, signed the consortium agreement for the co-funded project Data ProTech.
The project Data ProTech – “Supporting Data Protection Compliance in AI Technology Usage by Cyprus SMEs” aims to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the protection of personal data when using artificial intelligence. It is implemented under the European programme Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV-2024-DATA). The project has a duration of two years and will receive €250,000 in European funding.
Data ProTech will enhance the ability of SMEs in Cyprus to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 and the EU Artificial Intelligence Act (EU) 2024/1689. Among its key activities is a comprehensive study on the use of artificial intelligence by SMEs and the identification of compliance criteria under the above Regulations. Based on this work, a user-friendly and easily accessible online self-assessment tool will be developed to help businesses evaluate their compliance status.
In addition, training seminars will be organised for SMEs to support the effective use of the tool.
Although the programme and the tool are primarily targeted at SMEs in Cyprus, it will also be usable by larger enterprises both within Cyprus and across Europe.
