The first Chair in Artificial Intelligence, sponsored by XM Group, at the University of Cyprus.
The signing ceremony of the agreement for the establishment of the ” XM Chair of Artificial Intelligence” at the Department of Informatics of the University of Cyprus took place on Wednesday 25 September.
The XM Group undertakes the funding of the Chair at the University for 10 consecutive years in order to promote research, education and exploitation of research results in the field of Artificial Intelligence. The funding is in excess of EUR 1 million and requires the creation of the Chair and its staffing through the recruitment of an academic staff member at the rank of Professor.
The cooperation between the University of Cyprus and the XM Group through the Chair is the culmination of the University’s extroversion and its interconnection with external partners. The establishment and operation of the XM Chair in Artificial Intelligence aims to develop cutting-edge research and teaching. Through the Chair, a significant number of actions will be promoted aiming at research in the field of AI, student placements and human resources training.
The Vice Rector of Academic Affairs, Professor Eleni – Tatiani Synodinou, presented the objectives, the actions and the prospects through the establishment of the Chair of the University of Cyprus. The establishment of the XM Chair and the prospects of cooperation that open up demonstrate the high value of the research, expertise and innovation produced at the University of Cyprus. The Vice Rector noted that the University of Cyprus seeks to lead and pioneer as a fundamental pillar of the Cypriot research ecosystem and as a pole of international research excellence and distinction. The operation of the XM Chair is expected to enrich and promote research in the field of AI, with multiple benefits for the academic community, society and the economy. The XM Chair is expected to be an essential hub for academic development and to contribute in a multidimensional way to the evolution of the University of Cyprus. As a whole, the implementation of the XM Chair’s activities in AI is expected to bring valuable added value to its two main pillars, the University of Cyprus and the XM Group, constituting a joint investment for the future of the country and the new generation. Ms. Synodinou warmly thanked the XM Group of Companies for its confidence in the University of Cyprus.
The President of the Council of the University of Cyprus, Tasos Anastasiou, in his welcome address, noted that the fact that HM, an international organization with financial strength that would allow it to establish a chair in leading academic institutions abroad, chose the University of Cyprus to establish a chair in the field of AI, is a significant vote of confidence for us.
