The remarkable research work of two scientists of the University of Cyprus has been highlighted once again by the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF) and the Federation of Employers and Industrialists (OEB), in the context of the annual institution of the “Cyprus Innovation Awards” and the “Cyprus Research Awards”.
- The “Cyprus Research Award – Young Researcher 2022” in the thematic section Natural Sciences & Engineering was awarded to Dr. Leno Hadjidemetriou, Research Lecturer at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence of the University of Cyprus and Head of the Center’s research infrastructure in intelligent electric power systems .
Dr. Leno Hadjidemetriou studied electrical engineering and computer engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, while he obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Cyprus, where he developed an integrated framework of solutions for the advanced interconnection of renewable energy sources. From 2016 to 2019 he worked at the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence of the University of Cyprus as a post-doctoral researcher and from 2019 he became a Research Lecturer.
His research work focuses on power electronics control for renewable sources, intelligent energy storage systems, power grid management, control and security. Project, with a particular impact and essential contribution towards the green, digital and safe evolution of electricity supply systems.
Dr. Hadjidemetriou has substantially contributed to the development of advanced research infrastructures and laboratories at the University of Cyprus that are used by hundreds of students and researchers for education, research and innovation purposes, enabling the confirmation of innovative research results in prototype and pilot systems as well as digital twins of real energy plants. infrastructure.
To date, he has published more than 95 papers in prestigious scientific journals and international conferences, while he has secured 14 competitive fundings of more than 3.5 million euros, from European and national bodies.
In addition, he is responsible for the scientific and technical coordination of multiple research projects funded either by competitive programs or directly by companies and organizations active in the energy sector, effectively contributing to the transfer of knowledge from universities to industry. Last year he received funding to establish the innovative start-up Wise Wire Energy Solutions Limited, for pioneering digital solutions aimed at the international market for the intelligent management of energy storage systems in smart homes and networks.
- Dr. Ioanna Hadjiyianni, Assistant Professor at the Law Department of the University of Cyprus was honored with the “Cyprus Research Award – New Researcher 2022” in the Social Sciences and Humanities theme.
The Evaluation Committee chose Dr. Ioanna Hadjiyianni as a legal scholar who has demonstrated impressive achievements and received international recognition. Through her scientific work, she has significantly influenced the areas of regulatory challenges, with a particular emphasis on regulations related to environmental protection and climate change.
Despite the early stage of her career, she has an impressive resume that combines a wide range of academic subjects and applications. The committee has recognised the nomination of her monograph for the SLS Peter Birks Book Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship. Dr. Hadjiyianni has an active archive of blogs and online journals, which demonstrates the high level of her involvement in the dissemination of knowledge. In addition, her leadership skills are demonstrated through her role as coordinator of the Doctoral Programme of the Law Department of the University of Cyprus.
Finally, the committee recognized that its future research plans are carefully planned and suitable for its further scientific development, as they reveal its vision to identify and develop very important topics, with the potential to beneficially influence the future of Cyprus and beyond.
Ioanna Hadjiyianni did her undergraduate studies in law at Queen Mary University of London and her postgraduate studies in environmental law at University College London. Her research work, which has been published in international scientific journals and publishing houses, focuses on the global reach of European law, access to justice in environmental matters and EU funding sources as a tool to achieve the European Green Deal. She also holds the position of editor at the scientific journal Journal of Environmental Law.
Dr. Hadjiyianni, who received the “Cyprus Research Award-Young Researcher” in Social Sciences and Humanities, was initially appointed as a Lecturer in Public Law at the University of Cyprus, in 2019, from where she rose to her current position. Prior to her appointment she was a postdoctoral researcher at the Max Weber Programme, European University Institute. She was Visiting Lecturer in European Law from 2014-2015 and in Environmental Law from 2015-2016 at King’s College London.
Previously, he worked at the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament. She completed her full scholarship PhD at King’s College London in 2017. Her thesis on ‘The EU as a Global Regulator for Environmental Protection: A Legitimacy Perspective’ was published as a monograph and was shortlisted for the SLS Peter Birks Book Prize Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship.
The awarding of the Cypriot Innovation Awards and the Cypriot Research Awards and the awarding of distinguished companies and researchers, as well as their innovative and distinctive ideas, practices and applications, took place on 16 December 2022 at the Strovolos Municipal Theatre. The Awards were presented by S.A. the President of the House of Representatives Mrs. Annita Dimitriou.

Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου: Δύο Βραβεία Νέου Ερευνητή 2022 σε Ακαδημαϊκούς του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου
Το αξιοσημείωτο ερευνητικό έργο δυο επιστημόνων του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, ανέδειξε για ακόμη μια φορά το Ίδρυμα Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας (ΙδΕΚ) και η Ομοσπονδία Εργοδοτών και Βιομηχάνων (ΟΕΒ), στο πλαίσιο του ετήσιου θεσμού των «Κυπριακών Βραβείων Καινοτομίας» και των «Κυπριακών Βραβείων Έρευνας».
- Το «Κυπριακό Βραβείο Έρευνας – Νέος Ερευνητής 2022» στη θεματική ενότητα Φυσικές Επιστήμες & Μηχανική απονεμήθηκε στον Δρ Λένο Χατζηδημητρίου, Λέκτορα Ερευνητή στο Κέντρο Αριστείας για Έρευνα και Καινοτομία «Κοίος» του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου και Επικεφαλής της ερευνητικής υποδομής του Κέντρου σε ευφυή συστήματα ηλεκτρικής ισχύος.
Ο Δρ Λένος Χατζηδημητρίου σπούδασε ηλεκτρολόγος μηχανικός και μηχανικός υπολογιστών στο Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο, ενώ απέκτησε τον διδακτορικό του τίτλο στην Ηλεκτρολογική Μηχανική από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου, όπου ανέπτυξε ένα ολοκληρωμένο πλαίσιο από λύσεις για την προηγμένη διασύνδεση ανανεώσιμων πηγών ενέργειας. Από το 2016 μέχρι το 2019 εργάστηκε στο Κέντρο Αριστείας «Κοίος» του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου ως μεταδιδακτορικός ερευνητής και από το 2019 ανελίχθηκε σε Λέκτορα Ερευνητή.
Το ερευνητικό του έργο επικεντρώνεται στον έλεγχο ηλεκτρονικών ισχύος για ανανεώσιμες πηγές, σε ευφυή συστήματα αποθήκευσης ενέργειας, στη διαχείριση, έλεγχο και ασφάλεια δικτύων ηλεκτρικής ισχύος. Έργο, με ιδιαίτερο αντίκτυπο και ουσιώδη συνεισφορά προς την πράσινη, ψηφιακή και ασφαλή μετεξέλιξη των συστημάτων ηλεκτροδότησης.
Ο Δρ Χατζηδημητρίου έχει συμβάλει ουσιαστικά στην ανάπτυξη προηγμένων ερευνητικών υποδομών και εργαστηρίων στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου που χρησιμοποιούνται από εκατοντάδες φοιτητές και ερευνητές για σκοπούς εκπαίδευσης, έρευνας και καινοτομίας, επιτρέποντας την επιβεβαίωση καινοτόμων ερευνητικών αποτελεσμάτων σε πρωτότυπα και πιλοτικά συστήματα καθώς επίσης και σε ψηφιακά δίδυμα πραγματικών ενεργειακών υποδομών.
Μέχρι σήμερα, έχει δημοσιεύσει πέραν των 95 εργασιών σε έγκριτα επιστημονικά περιοδικά και διεθνή συνέδρια, ενώ έχει εξασφαλίσει 14 ανταγωνιστικές χρηματοδοτήσεις πέραν των 3.5 εκατομμυρίων ευρώ, από ευρωπαϊκούς και εθνικούς φορείς.
Επιπλέον, είναι υπεύθυνος για τον επιστημονικό και τεχνικό συντονισμό πολλαπλών ερευνητικών έργων που χρηματοδοτούνται είτε από ανταγωνιστικά προγράμματα ή απευθείας από εταιρείες και οργανισμούς που δραστηριοποιούνται στον τομέα της ενέργειας, συμβάλλοντας ουσιαστικά στη μεταφορά της γνώσης από τα πανεπιστήμια προς τη βιομηχανία. Πέρυσι έλαβε χρηματοδότηση για την ίδρυση της νεοφυούς καινοτόμου επιχείρησης Wise Wire Energy Solutions Limited, για πρωτοποριακές ψηφιακές λύσεις που απευθύνονται στη διεθνή αγορά για την ευφυή διαχείριση συστημάτων αποθήκευσης ενέργειας σε έξυπνα σπίτια και δίκτυα.
- Η Δρ Ιωάννα Χατζηγιάννη, Επίκουρη Καθηγήτρια στο Τμήμα Νομικής του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου τιμήθηκε με το «Κυπριακό Βραβείο Έρευνας – Νέος Ερευνητής 2022» στη θεματική Κοινωνικές και Ανθρωπιστικές Επιστήμες.
Η Επιτροπή αξιολόγησης επέλεξε τη Δρα Ιωάννα Χατζηγιάννη ως μια νομική επιστήμονα που έχει επιδείξει εντυπωσιακά επιτεύγματα και έχει λάβει διεθνή αναγνώριση. Μέσα από το επιστημονικό της έργο έχει επηρεάσει σημαντικά τους τομείς των ρυθμιστικών προκλήσεων, με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στις ρυθμίσεις που αφορούν στην προστασία του περιβάλλοντος και στην κλιματική αλλαγή.
Παρά το πρώιμο στάδιο της καριέρας της, έχει ένα εντυπωσιακό βιογραφικό που συνδυάζει ένα ευρύ φάσμα ακαδημαϊκών θεμάτων και εφαρμογών. Η επιτροπή έχει αναγνωρίσει την υποψηφιότητα του μονογράμματός της για το βραβείο SLS Peter Birks Book Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship. Η Δρ Χατζηγιάννη έχει ενεργό αρχείο ιστολογίων και διαδικτυακών περιοδικών, κάτι που αποδεικνύει το υψηλό επίπεδο της ενασχόλησής της με τη διάχυση της γνώσης. Επιπρόσθετα, οι ηγετικές της ικανότητες αποδεικνύονται μέσω του ρόλου της ως συντονίστρια στο Διδακτορικό Πρόγραμμα του Τμήματος Νομικής του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου.
Τέλος, η επιτροπή αναγνώρισε ότι τα μελλοντικά ερευνητικά της σχέδια είναι επιμελώς σχεδιασμένα και κατάλληλα για την περαιτέρω επιστημονική της ανάπτυξη, καθώς αποκαλύπτουν το όραμά της να εντοπίσει και να αναπτύξει πολύ σημαντικά θέματα, με δυνατότητα να επηρεάσει ευεργετικά το μέλλον της Κύπρου και όχι μόνο.
Η Ιωάννα Χατζηγιάννη πραγματοποίησε τις προπτυχιακές της σπουδές στη νομική στο Queen Mary University of London και τις μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο περιβαλλοντικό δίκαιο στο University College London. Το ερευνητικό της έργο, το οποίο έχει δημοσιευθεί σε διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά και εκδοτικούς οίκους, εστιάζει στην παγκόσμια εμβέλεια του ευρωπαϊκού δικαίου, στην πρόσβαση στη δικαιοσύνη σε περιβαλλοντικά ζητήματα και στις πηγές χρηματοδότησης της ΕΕ ως εργαλείο επίτευξης της Ευρωπαϊκής Πράσινης Συμφωνίας. Κατέχει, επίσης, τη θέση επιμελήτριας στο επιστημονικό περιοδικό Journal of Environmental Law.
Η Δρ Χατζηγιάννη, που έλαβε το «Κυπριακό Βραβείο Έρευνας-Νέος Ερευνητής» στη θεματική Κοινωνικές και Ανθρωπιστικές Επιστήμες, διορίστηκε, αρχικά, ως Λέκτορας Δημοσίου Δικαίου στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου, το 2019, απ’ όπου ανελίχθηκε στη σημερινή της θέση. Πριν από τον διορισμό της ήταν μεταδιδακτορική ερευνήτρια στο Max Weber Programme, του European University Institute. Διετέλεσε Επισκέπτρια Λέκτορας στο Ευρωπαϊκό Δίκαιο από το 2014-2015 και στο Περιβαλλοντικό Δίκαιο από το 2015-2016 στο King’s College London.
Προηγουμένως, εργάστηκε στην Επιτροπή Αναφορών του Ευρωπαϊκού Κοινοβουλίου. Ολοκλήρωσε το διδακτορικό της με πλήρη υποτροφία στο King’s College London το 2017. Η διατριβή της με θέμα ‘The EU as a Global Regulator for Environmental Protection: A Legitimacy Perspective’ δημοσιεύθηκε ως μονογραφία και ήταν ανάμεσα στα επικρατέστερα βιβλία για το βραβείο SLS Peter Birks Book Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship.
Η απονομή των Κυπριακών Βραβείων Καινοτομίας και των Κυπριακών Βραβείων Έρευνας και η βράβευση των επιχειρήσεων και ερευνητών που διακρίθηκαν, καθώς και των καινοτόμων και ξεχωριστών ιδεών, πρακτικών και εφαρμογών τους, πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 16 Δεκεμβρίου 2022 στο Δημοτικό Θέατρο Στροβόλου. Τα Βραβεία απένειμε η Α.Ε. η Πρόεδρος της Βουλής των Αντιπροσώπων κυρία Αννίτα Δημητρίου.
