The first training programme of the European project ‘Storytelling as Pharmakon in Premodernity and Beyond: Training the New Generation of Researchers in Health Humanities’ (StoryPharm) coordinated by the Research Unit for Medieval Arts and Rituals (CeMAR, https://www.ucy.ac.cy/cemar/) of the University of Cyprus was successfully completed.
The event took place between 16 and 20 June 2025 at the University of Cyprus. It hosted the partners of the project, as well as the 19 doctoral candidates employed by the project. This new research potential is expected, through the multifaceted training it will receive, to be used in the future in the fields of research, health, education and cultural industries.
The first training programme included seminars, workshops, guided tours and lectures by experts in the health humanities, as well as sessions open to the public. As part of the event, the project’s doctoral candidates and PhD students made a first contact with the health humanities, while getting to know each other and learning about the project and its network. In addition, the project members had the opportunity to get to know the University of Cyprus, to learn about the innovative research carried out at the country’s first university, to visit its library and to get in touch, through the specialised guided tours, with the rich cultural heritage of the island.
The StoryPharm project has secured €5.1 million in funding under the highly competitive European Horizon Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action – Doctoral Networks Programme (2021-2027). StoryPharm is a network of the Universities of Cyprus, Bamberg (Germany), Lund (Sweden), Salerno (Italy) and Cardiff (UK). Non-academic institutions including pharmaceutical companies, publishing houses, museums and libraries are also involved.
