University of Cyprus: The European Project StoryPharm of the Research Unit for Medieval Arts and Rituals concluded its Opening Symposium

The two-day symposium of the official launch of the new European project of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Networks action entitled “Storytelling as Pharmakon in Premodernity and Beyond: Training the New Generation of Researchers in Health Humanities ” (StoryPharm, Grant Agreement No. 101169114) coordinated by the Research Unit for Medieval Arts and Rituals (EMOMET, https://www.ucy.ac.cy/cemar/) of the University of Cyprus was successfully completed. The symposium, which took place on 17-18 October at the Information Centre – Library “Stelios Ioannou”, was attended by project partners from the Universities of Cyprus, Bamberg (Germany), Lund (Sweden), Salerno (Italy) and Cardiff (UK), as well as representatives from non-academic institutions involved in the project, including pharmaceutical companies, publishing houses, museums and libraries.

The first day of the symposium started with short greetings from the project coordinator, Prof. Stavroula Constantinou, the Vice Rector of Academic Affairs of the University of Cyprus, Prof. Eleni Tatiani-Synodinou, the Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies of the University of Cyprus, Prof. Georgia Panayiotou and the Chair of the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of the University of Cyprus, Prof. Dr. T. Panagiotou and the Chair of the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies of the University of Cyprus, Prof. T. Panagiotou. Marilena Karyolaimou, President of the University of Cyprus, and the President of the University of Cyprus, Professor Marilena Karyolaimou. The speakers stressed that the project, which has received the largest ever funding in Humanities Studies in Cyprus (5.1 million), contributes to the conduct of cutting-edge international research and the internationalisation of the University of Cyprus.

In her presentation, the representative of the European Commission and responsible for StoryPharm, Dr. Domna Paschalidou, suggested ways to effectively manage the project and stressed the obligations and duties of the partners.

Afterwards, the StoryPharm coordinator, Prof. Stavroula Konstantinou presented the collaborating institutions, the content, objectives and structure of the project, highlighting the impact it is expected to have at local and international level.

Concluding his presentation of the first day’s work, Prof. Timotheos Papadopoulos shared experiences and practices that contributed to the success of the corresponding Marie Skłodowska-Curie project he coordinated entitled “Neurodevelopmental Optimal-predictors Risk Factors and Intervention from a Systems Approach to Maladjustment in Children” (Neo-Prism-C).

The second day of the symposium included presentations on research and innovation at the University of Cyprus, the creation of a new publishing series inspired by StoryPharm’s research and the presentation of the project’s work packages.

The Head of the Research and Innovation Service of the University of Cyprus, Dr. Marios Demetriades, after a brief overview of the research activity carried out at the institution, demonstrated the dedication and excellence of its academics, who manage, as the example of StoryPharm shows, to highlight the University of Cyprus at an international level.

Dr. Eva Locher, representative of the prestigious and internationally renowned publishing house De Gruyter Brill, has officially expressed her proposal to create a new publishing series dedicated to the pre-modern humanities of health sciences, where the research results of the StoryPharm project will be published.

StoryPharm’s Manager, Pavlos Michaelides, presented the pillars that make up the coordination and management of the project, highlighting its large scale and the number of deliverables required for its successful completion.

StoryPharm’s Scientific Manager, Dr. Andria Andreou, referred to the content and the multidimensional and high-level training that the 19 PhD candidates of the project will receive, which will provide them with all the necessary skills to excel in the fields of research, health, education and cultural industries.

Finally, Prof. Stavroula Constantinou, gave a brief overview of the dissemination and communication practices that the StoryPharm network will follow. These practices aim to maximise the dissemination and promotion of the programme.
