University of Cyprus: SmartSPSS: The new research project coordinated by the University of Cyprus to address the challenges of photovoltaic integration

The inaugural event of the research project “Smart real-time monitoring, management and control solution for enhanced performance of Solar-Plus-Storage Systems” or “SmartSPSS”, was held on June 19, 2024 at the University of Cyprus. The Photovoltaic Technology Laboratory has the role of the project coordinator. The new project has secured funding of €39,200, under the Research and Innovation Foundation’s Call for Proposals of the “Investigation of Industrial Application of Technology/Technological Knowledge” programme, for the preliminary investigation of the potential industrial applications that the proposed technologies may have.

The aim of the “SmartSPSS” project is to integrate high shares of photovoltaic (PV) systems into the electricity grid by studying the synergies between PV and energy storage systems (batteries). Using PV systems with energy storage addresses one of the main challenges of solar energy – intermittent operation. With this background, this project will develop a management and control solution for PV systems with energy storage using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.

Undoubtedly, the long-term goal of the project is to achieve an advanced management and control solution, which will be the first solution of its kind. It is worth mentioning that, at present, there is no integrated predictive management and control solution for battery-powered PV systems with real-time response available on the market.

The results of the project are expected to have a direct impact on the energy Research and Innovation (R&I) landscape in Cyprus, contributing significantly to the goals for a climate-neutral Cyprus, ensuring the transition to clean energy, enhancing the security of energy supply and achieving a cleaner environment, in direct compliance with the Sustainable Development Goal no. This is inextricably linked and contributes to the Smart Specialization strategy for Cyprus (S3Cy) in the energy sector, so that renewable energy sources, with emphasis on photovoltaic and energy storage systems, contribute to the transition to green energy.

The official start date of the SmartSPSS project was 1 June 2024 and the project will be implemented within the next nine months.
