A great honor for the University of Cyprus and the scientific community of Cyprus in general, is the election of Professor Marios Polycarpou of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Cyprus and the Director of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, University of Cyprus, as a regular member of Academia Europaea in the field of Computer Science.

Professor Marios Polycarpou is the first academic from the University of Cyprus who receives this outstanding distinction, which is an important recognition of the excellence and the high level of research he conducts in the field of intelligent systems and networks, neural networks and computational intelligence, automatic fault diagnosis and control systems.

What is Academia Europaea

The European Academy of Sciences (Academia Europaea) was founded in 1988 and is a European non-governmental association that functions as an Academy. The members of the European Academy of Sciences are leading scientists and thinkers from the fields of physics, technology, biology, biology, medicine, mathematics and economics, law, as well as from the humanities, cognitive and social sciences. The aim of the Academy’s members is the collective promotion of knowledge, education, research for the benefit of society.

Its members come from all over the European continent, not only from the West Europe. Today approximately 4,000 people are members. Among them, there  are 72 Nobel laureates, several of whom were elected to the Academy before they were awarded the Nobel Prize, before receiving the prize. The Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tasos Christofides, congratulated the Professor Marios Polycarpou on his new international award “Recognition of the high value of the of the University of Cyprus academics at an international level is yet another proof of the quality of the people of our academic institution. The University of Cyprus and Cyprus in general is proud to have people of the scientific prestige of Mr. Polycarpou. The international distinctions of members of our  academic community and the extroversion of the University of Cyprus demonstrate the potential and prospects of the organisation’’, the Rector pointed out.

Short Curriculum Vitae Prof. Polycarpou

Marios Polycarpou, newly elected to the Academy, is a Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Director of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence at the University of Cyprus. He is a member of the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts.

He attended undergraduate studies at Rice University on a scholarship, USA (B.A. Computer Science, 1987, B.Sc. Electrical Engineering, 1987) and postgraduate studies at the University of Southern California, USA. (M.Sc., 1989, Ph.D., 1992, Electrical Engineering). In 1992, he joined the University of Cincinnati, U.S.A. where he became a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Computer and Information Technology Engineering. In 2001, he was the first academic member to join the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cyprus and served as Chairman of the Department from 2001-2008.

In 2006 he was elected as IEEE Fellow and during 2012-2013 he was the President of the IEEE.

He was elected as President of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (IEEE Computational Intelligence Society). In 2016 Professor Marios Polycarpou received the IEEE International Neural Networks Award Pioneer Award for his pioneering research in the field of neural networks. In his thirty-year academic career, Professor Polycarpou has secured competitive funding for more than 75 research projects in the US, in Europe and in Cyprus. But the greatest crowning achievement of his research excellence has been his European Research Council, the ERC Synergy Grant, the ERC Synergy Grant, the 2020, the ERC Advanced Grant in 2012, as well as the Teaming programme for upgrading the ERC’s research and development activities for KIOS into a European Center of Excellence.

In collaboration with his research team he has published more than 400 articles in international journals, books and conference proceedings on information technology and their application to power systems, distribution networks, energy systems, and water distribution networks, smart buildings, computer networks, robotics and smart buildings and intelligent transport. He has also registered 6 patents in health device automation.

Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου: Mέλος της Ευρωπαϊκής Ακαδημίας Επιστημών εκλέχθηκε ο Καθηγητής του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου Μάριος Πολυκάρπου

Σημαντική τιμή για το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου και την επιστημονική κοινότητα της Κύπρου γενικότερα, αποτελεί η εκλογή του Καθηγητή Μάριου Πολυκάρπου του Τμήματος Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών και Μηχανικών Υπολογιστών του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου και Διευθυντή του Κέντρου Αριστείας για Έρευνα και Καινοτομία «Κοίος», ως τακτικού μέλους της Ευρωπαϊκής Ακαδημίας Επιστημών (Academia Europaea) στην Tάξη της Πληροφορικής.

Ο Καθηγητής Μάριος Πολυκάρπου είναι ο πρώτος ακαδημαϊκός από το Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου που τυγχάνει αυτής της εξέχουσας διάκρισης, η οποία αποτελεί σημαντική αναγνώριση της επιστημονικής του αριστείας και του υψηλού επιπέδου έρευνας που διεξάγει στον τομέα των ευφυών συστημάτων και δικτύων, νευρωνικών δικτύων και υπολογιστικής νοημοσύνης, αυτόματης διάγνωσης σφαλμάτων και συστημάτων ελέγχου.

Τι είναι η Academia Europaea

Η Ευρωπαϊκή Ακαδημία Επιστημών (Academia Europaea) ιδρύθηκε το 1988 και είναι μια ευρωπαϊκή, μη κυβερνητική ένωση που λειτουργεί ως Ακαδημία. Τα μέλη της Ευρωπαϊκής Ακαδημίας Επιστημών είναι κορυφαίοι/ες επιστήμονες και στοχαστές/τριες από τους κλάδους της φυσικής, της τεχνολογίας, της βιολογίας, της ιατρικής, των μαθηματικών, των οικονομικών, της νομικής, καθώς και από τις ανθρωπιστικές, γνωστικές και κοινωνικές επιστήμες. Στόχος των μελών της Ακαδημίας είναι η συλλογική προώθηση της γνώσης, της εκπαίδευσης και της έρευνας προς όφελος της κοινωνίας.

Τα μέλη της προέρχονται από ολόκληρη την ευρωπαϊκή ήπειρο, όχι μόνο από τη Δυτική Ευρώπη. Σήμερα την ιδιότητα μέλους έχουν περίπου 4.000 άτομα. Ανάμεσά τους είναι 72 βραβευμένες/οι με Νόμπελ, αρκετοί/ές εκ των οποίων εξελέγησαν στην Ακαδημία πριν λάβουν το βραβείο.

Ο Πρύτανης του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, Καθηγητής Τάσος Χριστοφίδης συνεχάρη τον Καθηγητή Μάριο Πολυκάρπου για τη νέα διεθνή διάκρισή του «Η αναγνώριση της υψηλής αξίας ακαδημαϊκών του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου σε διεθνές επίπεδο αποτελεί ακόμα μία απόδειξη της ποιότητας των ανθρώπων του ακαδημαϊκού μας ιδρύματος. Είμαστε περήφανοι/ες, στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου αλλά και στην Κύπρο γενικότερα, που έχουμε ανθρώπους του επιστημονικού κύρους του κυρίου Πολυκάρπου. Οι διεθνείς διακρίσεις μελών της ακαδημαικής κοινότητάς μας και η εξωστρέφεια του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου αναδεικνύουν τις δυνατότητες και την προοπτική του οργανισμού», τόνισε ο Πρύτανης.

Σύντομο Βιογραφικό Καθ. Πολυκάρπου

Ο νεοεκλεγμένος στην Ακαδημία Μάριος Πολυκάρπου είναι Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών και Μηχανικών Υπολογιστών στο Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου, Διευθυντής του Κέντρου Αριστείας για Έρευνα και Καινοτομία «Κοίος» και μέλος της Κυπριακής Ακαδημίας Επιστημών, Γραμμάτων και Τεχνών.

Παρακολούθησε με υποτροφία βασικές σπουδές στο Rice University, Η.Π.Α. (B.A. Computer Science, 1987, B.Sc. Electrical Engineering, 1987) και μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο University of Southern California, Η.Π.Α. (M.Sc., 1989, Ph.D., 1992, Electrical Engineering). Το 1992, εντάχθηκε στο University of Cincinnati, Η.Π.Α όπου έγινε Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών και Μηχανικών Υπολογιστών και Πληροφορικής. Το 2001 ήταν το πρώτο ακαδημαϊκό μέλος που εντάχθηκε στο νεοσύστατο Τμήμα Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών και Μηχανικών Υπολογιστών του Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου, ενώ διετέλεσε Πρόεδρος του Τμήματος στο διάστημα 2001-2008.

Το 2006 είχε εκλεγεί IΕΕE Fellow και κατά το διάστημα 2012-2013 ανέλαβε την Προεδρία του Διεθνούς Οργανισμού Υπολογιστικής Νοημοσύνης (IEEE Computational Intelligence Society).  Το 2016 ο Καθηγητής Μάριος Πολυκάρπου έλαβε το Διεθνές Βραβείο IEEE Neural Networks Pioneer Award για την πρωτοποριακή του έρευνα στο κλάδο των νευρωνικών δικτύων.

Στην τριανταετή ακαδημαϊκή του καριέρα, ο Καθηγητής Πολυκάρπου έχει εξασφαλίσει ανταγωνιστικές χρηματοδοτήσεις για περισσότερα από 75 ερευνητικά έργα στις ΗΠΑ, στην Ευρώπη και στην Κύπρο. Μεγαλύτερο όμως επιστέγασμα της ερευνητικής αριστείας του αποτελούν οι χρηματοδοτήσεις από το Ευρωπαϊκό Συμβούλιο Έρευνας, το ERC Synergy Grant, το 2020, το ERC Advanced Grant, το 2012, ως επίσης και το πρόγραμμα Teaming για αναβάθμιση του «Κοίος» σε Ευρωπαϊκό Κέντρο Αριστείας.

Σε συνεργασία με την ερευνητική του ομάδα έχει δημοσιεύσει περισσότερα από 400 άρθρα σε διεθνή περιοδικά, βιβλία και πρακτικά συνεδρίων σε θέματα τεχνολογίας πληροφορίας και επικοινωνιών και στην εφαρμογή τους σε συστήματα ηλεκτρικής ενέργειας, δίκτυα διανομής νερού, έξυπνα κτήρια, δίκτυα ηλεκτρονικών υπολογιστών, ρομποτική και στις έξυπνες μεταφορές. Έχει επίσης κατοχυρώσει 6 πατέντες στην αυτοματοποίηση συσκευών υγείας.
