University of Cyprus: Professor Despo Fatta-Kassinos has been appointed to the Committee of the new Engineering Section of the Academy of Europe (Academia Europaea)

Despo Fatta-Kassinos, Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Cyprus, has been appointed as one of the seven members of the Committee of the new Engineering Section of the Academy of Europe. The establishment of the Commission marks the separation of the former Physics and Engineering Section into two autonomous disciplines. The new Engineering Section will be fully operational in view of the 2025/2026 academic cycle, with the Commission playing a catalytic role in setting up its operational framework.

The Academy of Europe is a pan-European academy of excellence, dedicated to promoting and disseminating excellence in scientific knowledge in the humanities, law, economic, social and political sciences, mathematics, medicine, as well as in all branches of science and technology, at a global level, for the benefit of the public and for the advancement of education for all ages. The Academy aims to strengthen European research, to advise governments and international organisations on scientific matters and to promote interdisciplinary and international cooperation in research.

Dr Fatta-Kassinos, internationally recognised for her work in the field of wastewater treatment engineering, strengthens the committee with scientific knowledge and valuable experience in interdisciplinary areas related to environmental technology. Her appointment is a clear recognition of her scientific contribution, her leadership and her long-standing contribution to the field of Environmental Engineering. Through her active participation in high-level research projects and strategic academic collaborations, both nationally and internationally, she has contributed substantially to the advancement and application of innovative environmental technologies. Her selection also highlights the Academy’s commitment to promoting diversity and broad representation in its governing bodies.
