Creating a coherent Strategy for sustainable water resources management, accelerating the green transition, and strengthening prevention against natural disasters.
A Cooperation Agreement to undertake joint actions to create a more resilient and sustainable campus was signed on Tuesday 12 March 2024 between the Water Development Department (WDD) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment and the Technical Services (TS) of the University of Cyprus.
The primary objective of the collaboration is to use the University Campus in Athalassa as the spatial field for the development of an exemplary, sustainable water resources management model. A study site that can serve as a model for similar cases and a bank of applications and good practises for research projects related to water management in the context of the implementation of the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC and the European Floods Directive 2007/60/EC.
Under the provisions of the Memorandum, the two parties will work together to develop the University of Cyprus’ Strategy for the sustainable management of its water resources, whether they concern rainwater, the water bodies of the Kalogeros River that crosses the campus and the existing lagoons and lakes, or groundwater and grey water. The framework for cooperation includes, inter alia, the exchange of know-how on water quality, water table levels, protection and landscaping of banks and restoration of the natural river and riparian ecosystem and the preparation and monitoring of a flood protection plan for the Campus.
During the meeting, the Head of Technical Services and Director of the Campus Development Office, Mr. Vassos Olympios, noted this collaboration will contribute to the University’s goal of creating a Sustainable and Smart Campus.
