University of Cyprus: Award to the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence for the promotion of Open Science

Another distinction for the University’s Research and Innovation Center of Excellence (KIOS CoE) Cyprus, as it was awarded with the YERUN Open Science Award 2022 by the Young Scientists Network European Research Universities Network (YERUN), for the adoption and implementation of good practices aimed at promoting Open Science.

Open Science, according to the European Commission, is defined as the continuous evolution of the way in which of conducting research and organising science. Open Science influences the way in which how research is conducted, researchers collaborate, knowledge is shared and organised science.

KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence, recognising the importance of disseminating research activity and results, has introduced and implemented a number of practices to promote Open Science, Open Data and reproducible research (In particular, the Center created the KIOS Open Knowledge portal, where scientific publications, datasets and software toolkits, the digital library for storing data and code, as well as the platform for reproducible research, through which research community can exploit results from the Centre to advance research. In addition, KIOS has developed a mobile application (available on Google and App Stores), which offers users the ability to collect data from the various sensors embedded in their mobile phones and share it with their consent for research purposes. In this way, the Center contributes to Citizen Science, as citizens become actively involved in the development of their own citizen science. participation in scientific research.

The Network of Young European Research Universities, since its establishment in 2016, has set itself the aim of this award is to promote Open Science and the purpose of this award is to reward good practices and policies implemented by universities and research institutions and research centres belonging to the Network. A total of 37 applications were submitted to the competition by Universities belonging to the Network, which were evaluated by a three-member committee. The application of KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence of the University of Cyprus is one of the five applications that were awarded.

The award ceremony was held online on 14 February 2023.
