We are proud to announce that on 17th February 2025 the University signed a three-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Cyprus Prisons Department, with the aim to strengthen the education, training and professional training programmes of prisoners and staff of the Department.
The MoU will assist in the design and implementation of supporting and educational online programmes aimed at prisoners, in the fields of psychology and law in particular, further strengthening capacity in relevant fields. The provision of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and personal and professional development opportunities by UCLan Cyprus to staff members of the Prisons Department and its Academy as well as collaboration, to submit proposals on subjects of mutual interest and secure funding from the European Union or other domestic and international programmes, lie at the core of this MoU.
During the signing ceremony at the premises of UCLan Cyprus, the Deputy Director of the Cyprus Prisons Department, Mr. Constantinos Constantinides stated: “It is with great pleasure that we sign this Memorandum of Understanding with UCLan Cyprus, as it marks a significant step in strengthening and further developing educational and professional training programmes for both prisoners and staff of the Prisons Department. Education plays a crucial role in the personal development and social reintegration of inmates, while continuous training for staff contributes to improving the conditions and services within our correctional system. Through this collaboration, we enhance access to knowledge and create new opportunities that promote education, professional growth, and ultimately, positive change in our society.”
Signing on behalf of the UCLan Cyprus Rector, the Head of the School of Law Professor Stéphanie Laulhé Shaelou, emphasised the importance of this collaboration for society as a whole by stating “UCLan Cyprus welcomes this initiative, as the Memorandum of Understanding with the Cyprus Prisons Department contributes to the further development of dedicated resources and capacity building of the prison environment in Cyprus, to the wider benefit of stakeholders and society”.
