Three (3) faculty members of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC) are included in the list of the top international researchers based on their published work and their impact on the scientific community for the year 2023. This international recognition is for Professor Michalinos Zembyla (Director of the Graduate Programme “Education Sciences” and Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Management), Associate Professor Antonis Zorpas (Director of the Master’s Programme “Environmental Sustainability Engineering” and Head of the Laboratory of Chemical and Sustainability Engineering) and Associate Professor Jahna Otterbacher (Head of the Research Centre for Algorithmic Transparency CyCAT and Dean of the Faculty of Science and Applied Sciences). This is an evaluation and international ranking that takes into account bibliometric data from the SCOPUS database on the published work of more than 7 million scientists worldwide, published by a research team led by Professor Ioannis Ioannidis of Stanford University, entitled “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators, 08/2024 data update“.
The updated ranking, published in September 2024 by the prestigious Elsevier (available here), takes into account all scientists who have published more than 5 scientific papers by 2023. It includes the world’s top 100,000 researchers in 22 disciplines and 174 sub-disciplines, as well as the top 2% of researchers in each discipline throughout their academic career. The ranking takes into account a number of parameters, such as the number of original scientific papers, the impact and impact of the papers in the scientific community, and the number of citations they have received according to the Scopus database.
The Rector of the Open University of Cyprus, Professor Stavros Stavrou, warmly congratulates Professors Zembyla, Zorpa and Otterbacher for this important distinction and for their contribution to the promotion of the research of the Open University of Cyprus at international level. Their success reflects the excellence that the Open University of Cyprus strives for, both through the production of innovative scientific knowledge and its impact on the global scientific community. The fact that three faculty members have been consistently distinguished in recent years for their research work confirms the quality and potential of the AUC to enhance its presence in the international scientific community.
