Pan-European project to implement cancer screening
The University of Cyprus Medical School is actively participating in the ambitious pan-European project EUCanScreen (“Implementation of cancer screening programs”), which is co-funded by the EU4Health programme of the European Union with a total budget of 38.7 million euros.
Aim
The EUCanScreen project, running from June 2024 to May 2028, aims to sustainably implement high-quality screening programmes for breast, cervical and colorectal cancer, as well as to prepare for the implementation of screening for lung, prostate and stomach cancer.
The project is coordinated by the University of Latvia and implemented with the participation of 29 countries (25 EU Member States, Ukraine, Moldova, Moldova, Norway, Iceland), 28 competent authorities, 61 associated and 7 collaborating partners. In Cyprus, the project is supported by the Ministry of Health and the University of Cyprus.
The role of the University of Cyprus
The scientific team of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Cyprus, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Anneza Yiallourou, with the participation of Associate Professor George Nicolopoulos and Postdoctoral Researcher Theodora Fteropoulos, is leading Activity 7.1 and co-leading Activity 7.2 in the framework of the 7th Work Package of the project.
The activities of the Work Package focus on:
- Determining the extent of implementation of quality assurance (QA) systems in cancer screening programmes in the European Union.
- Providing guidance on the integration of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) as a quality indicator.
- To establish and standardise key definitions for measuring and reporting interval cancer rates.
The participation of the University of Cyprus in EUCanScreen strengthens its role in the European scientific community in the field of public health and cancer control, promoting the interconnection of research, policy and health practice.
