The University of Cyprus’ “KIOS” Centre of Excellence contributes to the development of 6th generation (6G) networks and services

The Centre of Excellence for Research and Innovation “KIOS” of the University of Cyprus contributes to the development of 6th generation (6G) networks and services, through its participation in the innovative European Project “6G -VERSUS (6G Vertical Trials for Sustainability). The project is funded by the Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme of the European Union, in the framework of the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) initiative, which aims to promote Europe’s technological dominance in future smart networks.

The global push towards sustainability requires innovative solutions that combine technological progress with strategic experimentation. Achieving these results requires not only advanced technologies, but also their effective application in different industrial sectors. Environmental challenges in many sectors highlight the need for transformative methodologies that integrate efficiency and sustainability.

The 6G-VERSUS project includes planned tests and pilot applications, aimed at addressing critical challenges in five environmentally sensitive industry sectors. Each pilot cluster focuses on a unique use case, demonstrating the flexibility and potential of 6G technology:

  • Bulgaria: Testing of a renewable energy optimisation system using artificial intelligence.
  • Greece: Collaborative robotics for search and rescue operations.
  • Spain: Development of virtual telepresence technology for remote field operations.
  • Portugal: Monitoring environmental quality and safety levels in ports.
  • France: Water and waste data management for critical infrastructure.
  • Finland: Piloting an energy autonomous 5G base station, operating independently from the main electricity grid, enhancing the sustainability and autonomy of telecommunications infrastructure.

6G-VERSUS will design and develop an innovative methodology, which will transform existing use cases into 6G applications, with a three-pronged approach structure:

  • Vertical Apps,
  • Vertical Apps (Vertical Apps); Vertical Apps (Vertical Apps); Network Apps (Network Apps)
  • Vertical Apps (Vertical Apps), Network Apps (Network Apps), Network Apps (Network Apps), Network Apps (Vertical Apps).

This approach will optimise data and control flows in 6G systems, enabling smooth information flow and decision-making processes.

The research team of the KIOS Centre of Excellence at the University of Cyprus, led by Professor George Ellinas and in collaboration with Assistant Professor Panagiotis Kolios and Dr Irina Ciornei, Senior Research Associate, will lead the pilot implementation in Bulgaria and contribute to the innovative design, development, integration and testing of the triple approach for sustainable smart energy grids.

The 6G-VERSUS project brings together 34 partners from academia, research and industry, including universities, research centres, telecom companies, NGOs and SMEs from 10 European countries. The project is coordinated by the University of Oulu in Finland.
