The University of Cyprus participates as a key partner in the European research project 6G-LEADER (Learning-driven and Evolved Radio for 6G Communication Systems), through the Distributed and Networked Control Systems (DNCS) Group under the supervision of Assistant Professor Themistocles Charalambous and IRIDA, under the guidance of Professor Ioannis Krikidis of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Cyprus.
The 6G-LEADER project
The 6G-LEADER project aims to develop innovative technologies for the Radio Access Network (RAN) of the new generation of 6G networks. Particular emphasis is put on the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to optimise wireless communications, as well as on the design of a distributed RAN based on the O-RAN architecture.
Project innovations include the development of new antenna technologies, such as fluid-type antennas and reconfigurable smart surfaces, which allow dynamic adaptation of wireless links. In addition, the project exploits the 6G FR3 spectrum, develops new multiple access techniques and introduces innovative wireless solutions to support artificial intelligence applications within networks. These technologies are expected to make a significant contribution to shaping the future of telecommunications, offering higher speeds, improved energy efficiency and smart spectrum management.
The 6G-LEADER project is supported by a strong network of 18 partners from academia and industry, with expertise covering the entire 6G ecosystem.
The 6G-LEADER project is funded by the European Union and the European Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU), with a total budget of €7.998.705,00.
The kick-off meeting of the project
On 11-12 February 2024, the kick-off meeting of the project was held at the University of Cyprus, marking its official launch. Representatives from the project’s research and industrial partners attended the meeting, discussed collaboration strategies, technical challenges and set goals for the development of these innovative technologies. During the meetings, the work packages and project implementation were discussed, through Proof-of-Concepts and pilot tests that will determine the functionality of the 6G applications.
The University of Cyprus, through the DNCS Group and IRIDA research teams, reaffirms its commitment to being at the forefront of research and technological innovation, actively contributing to shaping the future of telecommunications networks through international collaborations and research activities.
