The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works announces the Agreement between the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services and the Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence “KIOS” for the implementation of an electromobility information system

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works (Department of Electrical and Mechanical Services (DEMS)) has signed an agreement with the Research and Innovation Centre of Excellence “KIOS” of the University of Cyprus on 2 April 2024. The aim of the agreement is the joint cooperation for the development and implementation of an information system, which will be an essential tool for the promotion of electromobility on our island.

Through this cooperation, the creation of an electronic register of recharging points, their coding, as well as the coding of other factors of electromobility will be achieved. By extension, the compliance of the Republic of Cyprus with the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2023/1804 on the development of alternative fuel infrastructure (AFIR) will be achieved.

In addition to the above, through the development of an interface with the recharging points, information will be offered to the public, in a user-friendly format, regarding the licensed, publicly accessible recharging points, while through the development of an interactive web application, their presentation in map format will be achieved. It is noted that the provision of additional facilities, such as the choice of recharging points per route, will be included. In addition, the development of an interactive application on mobile phones with Android and iOS operating systems is foreseen.

Finally, the implementation of the information system will allow the electronic submission of applications for the approval of recharging points, simplifying procedures, and ensuring efficiency in the management of authorisations, since the THMY is responsible for the approval of recharging points, in accordance with the Decree of 2022 on the Promotion and Development of Alternative Fuel Infrastructure.

The implementation of this agreement will contribute to the promotion of electromobility in Cyprus by providing the necessary information to all stakeholders with convenience and ease, and by leveraging technology, while facilitating the use of electric vehicles, thus contributing to the reduction of pollutants produced by transport vehicles on our island.
