The Computation-based Science and Technology Research Center (CaSToRC) of The Cyprus Institute hosted a landmark “Industry Day” on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, organised within the framework of the EUROCC2 project. The event, led by CaSToRC Director, Prof. Constantine Dovrolis, marks a significant step in incorporating advanced digital technologies such as High-Performance Computing (HPC), High-Performance Data Analytics (HPDA), large-scale machine learning (ML), Computational Modeling, and Simulations into the operations of Cypriot businesses.
Prominent Cypriot companies representing a broad spectrum of industries, such as Medochemie Ltd. (Pharmaceuticals), Photos Photiades Group Ltd. (Beverages and Real Estate), C. A. Papaellinas Emporiki Ltd. (Consumer Goods, Retail, and Logistics), Charalambides Christis Ltd. (Dairy Products), Levantina Fish Ltd. (Aquaculture and Seafood), Alion Vegetables & Fruits Co. Ltd. (Agriculture and Fresh Produce), and Firepro Systems Ltd. (Fire Safety and Security Systems), actively participated in the event and explored opportunities for integrating advanced computing technologies into their workflows.
These companies are important contributors to the national economy and play a key role in supporting local businesses, creating a positive impact within the country. Their dedication to adopting new technologies, driving change, and aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is evident through their efforts to improve operational efficiency and future-proof their businesses. The event also highlights CyI’s commitment to fostering sustainable economic growth in Cyprus in the era of AI and advanced computing. The Institute’s cutting-edge facilities and expertise are now more accessible to the private sector, bridging the gap between fundamental and industrial research.
The agenda of the workshop included welcome addresses by CyI President, Prof. Stavros Malas and CaSToRC Director, Prof. Constantine Dovrolis and a presentation by Assistant Vice President of Strategy and Development, Dr Konstantinos Kleovoulou. Industrial participants were introduced to CaSToRC’s expertise and industrial engagement activities by Managing Coordinator for Industrial and Cross-Disciplinary Collaborations, Dr Panayiota Katsamba.
The event featured inspirational success stories underscoring the strong potential of cross-disciplinary partnerships. Dr Sophia Louloudi, Principal Consultant at Hyperion Engineering Group presented a success story of leveraging CaSToRC’s expertise towards Hyperion’s Cutting-edge online process analysis technology for polymer production. Mr Stevan Čakić, presented the AimHigh success story on Computer Vision for Poultry Farms from EuroCC2 Montenegro NCC.
Bespoke presentations of advanced computing technologies and their industrial potential were delivered by CaSToRC faculty, research staff and technology experts, including ERA Chair Prof. Vangelis Harmandaris, Asst. Prof. Mihalis Nicolaou, Dr Andreas Demou, Dr Charalambos Chrysostomou, Dr Kyriaki Kylili, and Dr Leonidas Christodoulou.
The Cyprus Institute is dedicated to supporting Cyprus’s economic development through innovative research and collaboration, and the event marks the start of a series of similar engagements, strategically designed to forge closer ties between companies across various sectors, and strengthening CyI’s position as a leader in digital and green transitions.
