Airport operator Hermes Airport announced the donation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to the Cyprus Department of Forests, in order to contribute to the latter’s efforts in protecting and preserving the forests of Cyprus. This initiative is part of Hermes Airports’ efforts to promote sustainable development and strengthen efforts to protect the environment.
The UAV was designed and manufactured by the Unmanned Systems Research Laboratory (USRL) of The Cyprus Institute, as part of CyI’s Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C) efforts for the protection of Cyprus’ forests. The UAV was custom designed based on specifications from the Cyprus Department of Forests.
Hermes’ donation is follow-up of the August 2022 initiative called “The Green Lemonade”, in which airport operator staff members collected lemons from the 120 trees located around the Larnaca Airport, in cooperation with KEAN Company. Proceeds from the sales were allocated for environmental initiatives, such as the donation of a thousand seedlings and shrubs to the public.
“The use of modern technological means, particularly UAVs, is expected to significantly contribute to further enhancing the existing forest fire management system of Cyprus. The utilization of the unmanned aircraft manufactured by The Cyprus Institute, will be used for training the members of the Department of Forests’ Drone Team, thus contributing to the improvement of their operational capacity. This summer will be particularly challenging regarding forest fires due to the mild winter. That is why the UAV is going to be helpful for us”, said the Head of Department of Forests, Mr. Charalambos Alexandrou.
