On Thursday, 29th of September 2022, a delegation composed of representatives from the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), accompanied by representatives from the European Central Bank (ECB), and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), visited CyI’s premises in Nicosia with the purpose of learning more about how climate change and the energy transition will impact on the island’s economy, to discuss key climate and energy challenges in the medium to long term, as well as to learn more about progress towards Cyprus’ renewable energy goals.
The Cyprus Institute is one of the main reference points in terms of climate predictions for Cyprus and the broader Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Region(EMME), as well as a leader on the island in renewable energy technologies. It is also the interim secretariat for the EMME Climate Initiative (EMME-CCI), and is the home of the Climate and Atmosphere Research Centre (CARE-C), a regional Centre of Excellence for climate and atmosphere research in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region, funded through the EMME-CARE project (this project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the Cyprus Government).
Following presentations and a discussion centred on climate and energy, the delegation took a guided tour of key CyI facilities related to energy and climate, and before departing they expressed how impressed they were by CyI’s efforts towards tackling the twin challenges of climate change and the energy transition.
Hosting the meeting were CyI President, Advisor and Special Envoy of the President of the Republic on Climate Change, Prof. Costas N. Papanicolas, and CyI Asst. Vice-President for Institute Affairs, Dr Nicolas Jarraud, in the presence of CARE-C Director, Prof. Jean Sciare, EEWRC Director, Prof. Fadi Comair, Asst. Vice President of Policy and Internal Communications, Mrs. Eleni Sophocleous, CyI Prof. Theodoros Zachariadis, and CyI Assoc. Research Scientist, Dr Nestor Fylaktos.
