The 5th ESEIA Conference entitled “Towards Climate-Neutral Energy Communities” was successfully held at the premises of The Cyprus Institute on the 2nd and 3rd of November 2022. The event hosted more than 45 international speakers and panelists from diverse and multi-disciplinary backgrounds, and attracted local researchers, scientists, students and market professionals in the audience.

The Conference focused on the discussion around the importance of successfully achieving the climate neutrality, which is vital for the sustainability and the future of our planet, as well as on highlighting those initiatives such as the ESEIA Conference, need to happen more often. The participants agreed that actions are the key in order to effectively mitigate energy intensity, carbon footprint, and to reduce vulnerability to climate change, as post-carbon energy transitions are a matter of necessity for our planet.

The keynote speeches were delivered by the Director and Member of the Governing Council of the European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance, Brigitte Hasewend, the CEO of the European Partnership Driving Urban Transitions/ Austrian Research Promotion Agency FFG, Margit Noll, the Distinguished Professor (Scientia) of High Performance Architecture at UNSW, Mat Santamouris, and the Mayor of the Municipality of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides.

Three parallel sessions took place on the first day, during which the speakers presented their scientific work and participated in panel discussions with the audience. On the second day, local start-ups, as well as innovative proposals were accepted, and researchers involved with the U-SOLVE project had the chance to present their concept and ideas.

The European Sustainable Energy Innovation Alliance (ESEIA) is a recognised European Association of leading organisations representing the entire renewable energy innovation landscape. As a cross-sector alliance, ESEIA approaches energy transition from a systemic point of view, from energy provision to energy consumption, in research, teaching, business, and governance.
