The Cyprus Center for Trustworthy AI (CyCAT) at the Open University of Cyprus (OUC) has launched a new project, PINNACLE (Public Engagement in AI Evaluation for Education and System Benchmarking), which is supported by the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation (BRIDGE2HORIZON/0823E/0203). The funding (150.000 euro) will allow the OUC research team to perform initial scientific research, which will lead to the coordination of a proposal to extend the work via Horizon Europe.
With the emergence of Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Fundamental Models, such as Open AI’s GPT or Google’s Gemini, new products and services with AI capabilities enter the market every day. PINNACLE aims to develop innovative mechanisms and tools that will allow the public to participate actively in discovering and evaluating AI-enabled products and services, in the spirit of the EU’s vision for Trustworthy AI. According to the EU AI Act, to be considered “trustworthy”, AI systems must respect specific principles, such as technical reliability, fairness, non-discrimination and respect for users’ privacy. The methodology to be followed by the PINNACLE team will enable the public to express their opinion –in a systematic way- on whether the AI-enabled systems they use are truly “trustworthy”.
In the first phase of the project, the OUC research team will offer a new addition of CyCAT’s online course “AI in Everyday Life”. The course, which will start on 30 April 2025, will run for 8 weeks, and will introduce key concepts and application areas of modern AI. The course will be offered in both Greek and English, assuming no technical background, without registration fees. However, participants will be expected to participate actively in the course exercises, which will contribute to the development of the PINNACLE mechanisms described above. Participants who complete the course will be the first to learn about the research results, and will receive a certificate of completion.
