Open University of Cyprus (OUC): OUC coordinates new European COST action in the field of ecosystem services with the participation of 24 countries
Another important research success of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC) and the Laboratory of Terrestrial Ecosystem Management, which is directed by Professor Ioannis Vogiatzakis, is the approval by the EU and specifically by the European Cooperation in Science & Technology (COST) programme of funding for the implementation of Action CA21158 – Enhancing Small-Medium IsLands resilience by securing the sustainability of Ecosystem Services (SMILES).
The coordinator of the SMILES action, which is funded under a highly competitive call, is Professor Ioannis Vogiatzakis. The consortium brings together scientists, academics, and researchers in the fields of environmental sciences and institutions from 24 countries. European islands are hotspots of biological and pastoral diversity and, compared to mainland regions and countries, are more vulnerable to climate change, tourism development, economic crises and problems caused by frequent land use changes. All these parameters have a serious impact on the environment and therefore have an impact on the biodiversity of the islands, on ecosystem services and ultimately on the quality of life of their inhabitants. Existing techniques can adequately predict the ecological changes caused by the climate of the larger islands, but for the smaller islands additional research is required. The objective of this COST Action (4-year duration, 09/2022-09/2026) is to serve as a platform for coordinated interdisciplinary research on different aspects of mapping and assessment of ecosystem services on small and medium-sized European islands, in order to enhance existing knowledge and develop appropriate practices to protect their biodiversity and enhance their sustainable development.
The SMILES action contributes, inter alia, to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in particularly goals 13, 14, 15 on climate change, conservation and sustainable use of natural and water resources.

Aνοικτό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου(ΑΠΚΥ) : Το ΑΠΚΥ συντονίζει νέα ευρωπαϊκή δράση COST στο πεδίο των οικοσυστημικών υπηρεσιών με τη συμμετοχή 24 χωρών
Μία ακόμη σημαντική ερευνητική επιτυχία του Ανοικτού Πανεπιστημίου Κύπρου (ΑΠΚΥ) και του Εργαστηρίου Διαχείρισης Χερσαίων Οικοσυστημάτων, το οποίο διευθύνει ο Καθηγητής Γιάννης Βογιατζάκης, αποτελεί η έγκριση από την Ε.Ε. και συγκεκριμένα από το ευρωπαϊκό πρόγραμμα COST (European Cooperation in Science & Technology) χρηματοδότησης για την υλοποίηση της δράσης CA21158 – Enhancing Small-Medium IsLands resilience by securing the sustainability of Ecosystem Services (SMILES).
Συντονιστής της δράσης SMILES, η οποία χρηματοδοτείται στο πλαίσιο μιας ιδιαίτερα ανταγωνιστικής πρόσκλησης, είναι ο Καθηγ. Γιάννης Βογιατζάκης. Στην κοινοπραξία συμμετέχουν επιστήμονες, ακαδημαϊκοί και ερευνητές στα πεδία των επιστημών του περιβάλλοντος και ιδρύματα από 24 χώρες. Τα ευρωπαϊκά νησιά είναι εστίες βιολογικής και ποιλτιστικής ποικιλότητας και, σε σύγκριση με τις ηπειρωτικές περιοχές και χώρες, είναι πιο ευάλωτα στην κλιματική αλλαγή, την τουριστική ανάπτυξη, τις οικονομικές κρίσεις και τα προβλήματα που προκαλούνται από τις συχνές αλλαγές χρήσης γης. Όλες αυτές οι παράμετροι έχουν σοβαρές επιπτώσεις στο περιβάλλον και άρα αντίκτυπο στη βιοποικιλότητα των νησιών, τις οικοσυστημικές υπηρεσίες και εν τέλει στην ποιότητα ζωής των κατοίκων τους. Υπάρχουσες τεχνικές μπορούν να προβλέψουν με επάρκεια τις οικολογικές αλλαγές που προκαλούνται από το κλίμα των μεγαλύτερων σε έκτακτη νησιών, αλλά για τα μικρότερα σε μέγεθος νησιά απαιτείται πρόσθετη έρευνα. Στόχος της συγκεκριμένης δράσης COST (4ετής διάρκεια, 09/2022-09/2026) είναι να λειτουργήσει ως πλατφόρμα για συντονισμένη διεπιστημονική έρευνα σε διάφορες πτυχές της χαρτογράφησης και αξιολόγησης των οικοσυστημικών υπηρεσιών στα μικρά και μεσαίου μεγέθους ευρωπαϊκά νησιά, προκειμένου να ενισχυθούν οι υπάρχουσες γνώσεις και να αναπτυχθούν κατάλληλες πρακτικές, ώστε να προστατευθεί η βιοποικιλότητα και να ενισχυθεί η βιώσιμη ανάπτυξή τους.
H δράση SMILES συμβάλλει, μεταξύ άλλων, στους Στόχους Βιώσιμης Ανάπτυξης του ΟΗΕ και ιδιαίτερα στους στόχους 13, 14, 15 για την κλιματική αλλαγή, τη διατήρηση και τη βιώσιμη εκμετάλλευση των φυσικών και υδάτινων πόρων.
