The Nicosia Municipality, listening to international trends in addressing economic and other problems and promoting gender mainstreaming, implemented a 4-month pilot project.
The pilot project on gender mainstreaming was implemented by the Fimonoi Foundation, in cooperation with the Municipality of Reykjavik, and funded by the Norwegian Funding Agency. Responsibility for the implementation of the project was held by the President of the Fiminoi Foundation, Mrs. Mary Pyrgos, who worked closely with a two-member coordination team from the Municipality, which was responsible for the project activities.
During the pilot project, a first overview of the situation was conducted, officials from 17 Municipality Departments/Bureaus were trained to gain better knowledge of the issue, individual meetings with supervisors were held and a survey through questionnaires was conducted among the Municipality’s staff.
The aim of the survey was to find out whether the staff is aware of what the conventions and measures promoted, the commitments of the Republic of Cyprus in terms of gender mainstreaming and the benefits arising from it, as well as the relevant practices of the Municipality. The results of the survey were analysed by statistician/analyst Professor Dr. Charitini Tsagari and helped in preparing recommendations on the measures to be promoted by the Nicosia Municipality to achieve gender mainstreaming and gender budgeting.
In a meeting between the Mayor of Nicosia Mr. Charalambos Prountzos and the President of the Foundation Ms. Mary Pyrgos, they discussed the problems and challenges encountered during the implementation of the project as well as the benefits of gender mainstreaming and gender budgeting in the Organization. Ms. Pyrgou handed over to the Mayor her recommendations which include, among others, the preparation of an action plan to better serve the needs of all population groups (men-women, children-adolescents-seniors, people with special problems), transparency and fairer distribution of the Municipality’s resources.
