Nicosia Municipality: Nicosia is awarded as the Green City of Cyprus for 2024

The Municipality of Nicosia was awarded the Green City of Cyprus 2024 award, in the framework of the Pancyprian Environmental Awards, for the action ‘Rainwater Harvesting and Groundwater Quality Improvement through the Use of Green Microalgae’ in the category Water Resources Management.

The award was received by Councillor Lina Feneridou at the award ceremony, representing the Municipality in another important environmental award.

The awarded action is a pioneering initiative, which is being implemented for the first time in Cyprus and is being implemented in the framework of the European project CARDIMED, aiming at the use of innovative natural solutions in water management. Through the use of green microalgae, the improvement of groundwater quality is achieved, while at the same time the collection and reuse of rainwater is promoted. This innovative approach enhances the city’s resilience to the impacts of climate change, combining scientific innovation with environmental sustainability.

The award is recognition of the Nicosia Municipality’s firm commitment to the green transition and the adoption of solutions with long-term benefits for the urban environment. The Municipality’s initiatives are part of a broader strategy that emphasises the use of innovation, sustainability of infrastructure and participation in European partnerships to promote Nicosia as a model Mediterranean city.

The CARDIMED project, in which the Municipality is an active partner, focuses on strengthening environmental resilience through the contribution of science and technology, focusing on the specific needs of Mediterranean regions.
