The Municipality of Nicosia has achieved another significant European distinction, having been selected by the European Commission as one of the three finalists for the title of European Rising Innovative City at the European Capital of Innovation Awards 2025 (iCapital Awards). Nicosia is competing for this prestigious award alongside the cities of Aalborg (Denmark) and San Sebastian (Spain).
The European Innovation Awards recognise cities that lead the way in promoting and implementing innovative practices aimed at improving citizens’ quality of life, strengthening scientific collaboration, supporting start-ups, and advancing sustainable development. Since 2014, the iCapital Awards have honoured cities that demonstrate bold leadership and foster environments that encourage innovation and citizen participation.
The programme is implemented under the European Innovation Council (EIC) and funded by Horizon Europe, the EU’s flagship research and innovation funding programme.
The Municipality of Nicosia expresses its great satisfaction with this European recognition, which confirms its ongoing efforts to create a modern, sustainable, and innovative city that continually invests in knowledge, technology, and citizen engagement.
The final award ceremony is expected to take place in 2026.
