Launch of Roadmap update for Research Infrastructures: environmental considerations now an additional key requirement

The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) has kicked-off the process of updating its Roadmap for the development and construction of the next generation of pan-European research infrastructures.

New opportunities for Research Institutes

The competition is now open! With the launch, interested parties can begin preparing their proposals to enter the ESFRI Roadmap.

What’s new?

One of the novelties of this round is the introduction of environmental considerations as an additional key requirement.

Furthermore, proposals need to have a clear focus on the financial sustainability of the proposed infrastructure and its positioning in the European Research Infrastructure landscape needs to be described with more detail than previously.

Finally, aspects such as data security measures and compliance with the Open Science approach have been reinforced to align the entire process to the latest policy priorities.

The journey toward becoming a landmark

Once on the ESFRI roadmap, projects receive support through Horizon Europe for the preparatory and early implementation phases. Projects have ten years to progress from the preparatory to the implementation phase, with the possibility to obtain then the ESFRI landmark status. This recognition is not only prestigious but can also unlock further national and European funding opportunities.

The landscape analysis: an important assessment exercise

The Roadmap launch follows the publication of the Landscape Analysis 2024 in June. This analysis provides an overview of the current state of European research infrastructures, identifying key challenges, gaps, and trends. It feeds into the roadmap process and provides a framework for new proposals, without excluding brilliant ideas that might not have been identified as gaps or new trend.

As a novelty, information for each Research Infrastructure featured in the landscape analysis will now be updated on an annual basis, ensuring that research infrastructure portfolio remains dynamic and reflective of the latest developments and challenges in the field.
