Have your say on the new Medical Countermeasures Strategy

The Commission has launched a call for evidence to gather input for the upcoming Strategy to support medical countermeasures against public health threats.

The strategy, announced by President Ursula von der Leyen in her political guidelines and included in the Preparedness Union Strategy, will identify key measures to further accelerate innovation and supply of medical countermeasures.

Medical countermeasures encompass vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics, and personal protective equipment (PPE). They play a vital role to enhance our protection from current and future health emergencies, including those arising from infectious disease outbreaks, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) threats, or other large-scale cross-border emergencies.

The upcoming strategy will set out how to advance at EU level the development and availability of medical countermeasures and high-value technologies relevant for our health security.

Overall, the strategy aims to help improve the EU’s preparedness, security and strategic autonomy, while also accelerating innovation in sectors which are key for Europeans’ health and well-being and for the competitiveness of our economy.

Designing the strategy together

The call for evidence aims to gather the views of stakeholders, including experts, and of the general public, and provides them with an opportunity to help design the Medical Countermeasures Strategy in a collaborative, transparent and inclusive way.

The call for evidence is available on the Commission’s “Have your Say” portal in all official EU languages and will close on 9 May 2025.
