The European Commission is reviewing how the European Capitals of Culture action is set up to ensure the initiative remains relevant, inclusive and impactful.  This is your chance to influence the process. Have your say until 2 January 2026.

The European Commission has published a public consultation on the European Capitals of Culture (ECoC) action, running from 3 December 2025 to 2 January 2026.

Why does this consultation matter?

2025 marks the 40th anniversary of this flagship EU cultural initiative. Through the years, it has brought together cities, regions, countries and, most importantly, people. 

By sharing your views, you will help the EU to:

  • ensure the initiative remains accessible and aligned with today’s global challenges
  • strengthen cooperation among those involved in past, present or future capitals of culture
  • improve the initiative’s visibility and long-term legacy

Your contribution will help keep the European Capitals of Culture meaningful and impactful in every aspect.

About the European Capitals of Culture

Launched in 1985 on the initiative of the Greek Minister of Culture, Melina Mercouri, the European Capitals of Culture action has grown into one of the most ambitious cultural projects in Europe and one of the best known – and most appreciated – activities of the EU. 

The objectives are to promote the diversity of cultures in Europe, to highlight the common features they share and to foster the contribution of culture to the long-term development of cities.
