The first non-public University in Cyprus to participate in one of the 16 European Universities that have been approved and will receive a grant from the European Commission

Frederick University announces the successful evaluation and selection of the EU-CONEXUS Plus consortium, of which it is a member, for funding from the European Commission under the open and highly competitive call for proposals in the Erasmus+ European Universities 2022 Programme. Frederick University is the only non-public university institution in Cyprus to be a full member of a consortium which has been awarded funding and continuation for another four years, as announced on 27 July by the European Commission. In particular, the EU-CONEXUS Plus consortium will receive funding of €14.4 million.

EU-CONEXUS Plus focuses on the intelligent sustainable management of the urban coastal zone and aims to develop innovative educational methods and interdisciplinary approaches in the fields of sustainability, circular economy and blue growth.

Jean-MarcOgier, Head of the Governing Board of the EU-CONEXUS consortium, welcomed the European Commission’s decision and welcomed Cyprus, Germany and Ireland as full members: “The EU-CONEXUS family has grown with the full integration of Frederick University from Cyprus and the partner universities from Germany and Ireland. Together we will continue and expand the transformation of higher education in Europe. We continue together for our common purpose.”

Frederick University Rector and member of the consortium’s Governing Board, Professor George Demosthenous, said: “We were confident from the outset that the EU-CONEXUSPlus consortium would be successfully evaluated and awarded a grant to continue. I would like to thank all my colleagues at the University, members of the academic, research and administrative staff who worked systematically and in collaboration with our partner teams for this result, so that we are the first non-public university in Cyprus to achieve this European distinction. I would also like to thank our university partners for their substantial cooperation at all levels, as well as our social partners involved in the consortium: the Municipality of Limassol, the Cyprus Ports Authority and the Municipality of Ayia Napa. I am confident that our cooperation will lead to the common goal of sustainable development of the coastal areas of our network. We are particularly proud because through our participation in this consortium, we are giving our students the opportunity to obtain degrees at bachelor, master and doctoral level by combining studies in various European universities. From today, we are opening up horizons of great potential for our university community and our society.”

Within EU-CONEXUS Plus, Frederick University will lead 2 major work packages: the Training for Teaching Community (EU-CONEXUS Teaching Academy) and the Green Campus, while the consortium’s activities substantially involve a significant number of members of Frederick University’s academic, research and administrative community as well as students of the University.

Frederick University is expected to receive additional state sponsorship for this success, in accordance with the decision taken by the Council of Ministers on 9 February 2022, which provides for a grant of 100 thousand euros for each university that secures participation in a European University Consortium.

EU-CONEXUS Plus is part of the “European Universities” initiative, one of the most flagship initiatives of the European Union aimed at the ambitious vision of building a European Area of Education and Research. The European Commission particularly values as the future of higher education in Europe consortia that focus on sustainability, European values, and the implementation of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including EU-CONEXUS Plus.

The 9 partners participating in the EU-CONEXUS Plus consortium are Rochelle Université (France), the Agricultural University of Athens (Greece), the Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (Romania), Klaipeda University (Lithuania), Universidad Catolica de Valencia “San Vicente Martir” (Spain) and the University of Zadar (Croatia), Waterford Institute of Technology (Ireland) and the University of Rostock (Germany) and Frederick University (Cyprus). The consortium also includes 18 social partners from the nine countries, including the Limassol Municipality, the Cyprus Ports Authority, and the Municipality of Ayia Napa from Cyprus.

Πανεπιστήμιο Frederick: Μεγάλη ευρωπαϊκή επιτυχία και σημαντική διάκριση για το Πανεπιστήμιο

Το πρώτο μη δημόσιο Πανεπιστήμιο στην Κύπρο που μετέχει σε ένα από τα 16 Ευρωπαϊκά Πανεπιστήμια που εγκρίθηκαν και θα τύχουν επιχορήγησης από την Κομισιόν.

Το Πανεπιστήμιο Frederick ανακοινώνει την επιτυχή αξιολόγηση και επιλογή της κοινοπραξίας EU-CONEXUS Plus, στην οποία ανήκει, για χρηματοδότηση από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή, στο πλαίσιο της ανοιχτής και εξαιρετικά ανταγωνιστικής πρόσκλησης υποβολής προτάσεων στο πρόγραμμα Erasmus+ European Universities 2022. Το Πανεπιστήμιο Frederick είναι το μοναδικό μη δημόσιο πανεπιστημιακό ίδρυμα στην Κύπρο που συμμετέχει ως πλήρες μέλος σε κοινοπραξία η οποία πέτυχε χρηματοδότηση και τη συνέχισή της για ακόμη τέσσερα χρόνια, όπως ανακοινώθηκε στις 27 Ιουλίου από την Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή. Συγκεκριμένα, η κοινοπραξία EU-CONEXUS Plus θα λάβει χρηματοδότηση ύψους 14.4 εκατ. ευρώ.

Το EU-CONEXUS Plus εστιάζει στην ευφυή αειφόρο διαχείριση της αστικής παράκτιας ζώνης και στόχος του είναι να αναπτύξει καινοτόμες εκπαιδευτικές μεθόδους και διεπιστημονικές προσεγγίσεις στους τομείς της αειφορίας, της κυκλικής οικονομίας και της γαλάζιας ανάπτυξης.

Ο επικεφαλής του Governing Board της κοινοπραξίας EU-CONEXUS, Jean-MarcOgier, χαιρέτισε την απόφαση της Ευρωπαϊκής Επιτροπής και καλωσόρισε την Κύπρο, τη Γερμανία και την Ιρλανδία ως πλήρη μέλη της: «Η οικογένεια του EU-CONEXUS μεγάλωσε με την πλήρη ενσωμάτωση του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick από την Κύπρο και των συνεργαζόμενων Πανεπιστημίων από Γερμανία και Ιρλανδία. Μαζί θα συνεχίσουμε και θα επεκτείνουμε τη μεταμόρφωση της ανώτερης εκπαίδευσης στην Ευρώπη. Συνεχίζουμε μαζί για τον κοινό μας σκοπό.»

Ο Πρύτανης του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick και μέλος του Governing Board της κοινοπραξίας, Καθηγητής Γιώργος Δημοσθένους, αναφέρει: «Ήμασταν εξ αρχής βέβαιοι για την επιτυχή αξιολόγηση και επιχορήγηση για συνέχιση της κοινοπραξίας EU–CONEXUSPlus. Ευχαριστώ όλους και όλες τους/τις συναδέλφους μου στο Πανεπιστήμιο, μέλη του του ακαδημαϊκού, ερευνητικού και διοικητικού προσωπικού που εργάστηκαν συστηματικά και σε συνεργασία με τις ομάδες των εταίρων μας για αυτό το αποτέλεσμα, ώστε να είμαστε το πρώτο μη δημόσιο πανεπιστήμιο της Κύπρου που πετυχαίνει αυτή την ευρωπαϊκή διάκριση. Θέλω επίσης να ευχαριστήσω τους πανεπιστημιακούς μας εταίρους για την ουσιαστική συνεργασία σε όλα τα επίπεδα αλλά και τους κοινωνικούς μας εταίρους που συμμετέχουν στην κοινοπραξία: τον Δήμο Λεμεσού, την Αρχή Λιμένων Κύπρου και τον Δήμο Αγίας Νάπας. Είμαι βέβαιος πως η συνεργασία μας θα οδηγήσει στον κοινό στόχο της αειφόρου ανάπτυξης των παράκτιων περιοχών του δικτύου μας. Είμαστε ιδιαίτερα περήφανοι γιατί μέσα από τη συμμετοχή μας σε αυτή την κοινοπραξία, δίνουμε στους φοιτητές και τις φοιτήτριές μας τη δυνατότητα να αποκτούν τίτλους σπουδών σε πτυχιακό, μεταπτυχιακό και διδακτορικό επίπεδο συνδυάζοντας σπουδές σε διάφορα ευρωπαϊκά πανεπιστήμια. Από σήμερα, ανοίγουμε ορίζοντες μεγάλων προοπτικών για την πανεπιστημιακή μας κοινότητα και την κοινωνία μας.»

Στο πλαίσιο του EU-CONEXUS Plus, το Πανεπιστήμιο Frederick θα ηγείται 2 σημαντικών πακέτων εργασίας: του πακέτου Training for Teaching Community (EU-CONEXUS Teaching Academy) και του Green Campus ενώ στις δράσεις της κοινοπραξίας εμπλέκεται ουσιαστικά σημαντικός αριθμός μελών της πανεπιστημιακής κοινότητας του Πανεπιστημίου Frederick σε ακαδημαϊκό, ερευνητικό και διοικητικό επίπεδο αλλά και φοιτητές και φοιτήτριες του Πανεπιστημίου.

Το Πανεπιστήμιο Frederick αναμένεται να τύχει επιπρόσθετης κρατικής χορηγίας για αυτή του την επιτυχία, σύμφωνα με την απόφαση που έλαβε το Υπουργικό Συμβούλιο στις 9 Φεβρουαρίου 2022 και η οποία προβλέπει χορηγία ύψους 100 χιλιάδων ευρώ για κάθε πανεπιστήμιο που εξασφαλίζει συμμετοχή σε κοινοπραξία Ευρωπαϊκών Πανεπιστημίων.

Το EU-CONEXUS Plus αποτελεί μέρος της πρωτοβουλίας «Ευρωπαϊκά Πανεπιστήμια», μίας από τις πλέον εμβληματικές πρωτοβουλίες της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης με στόχο το φιλόδοξο όραμα της οικοδόμησης ενός Ευρωπαϊκού Χώρου Εκπαίδευσης και Έρευνας. Η Ευρωπαϊκή Επιτροπή αξιολογεί ως το μέλλον της ανώτερης εκπαίδευσης στην Ευρώπη ιδιαίτερα τις κοινοπραξίες που επικεντρώνονται στη αειφορία, στις ευρωπαϊκές αξίες και στην υλοποίηση των 17 Στόχων Βιώσιμης Ανάπτυξης των Ηνωμένων Εθνών, ανάμεσά τους το EU-CONEXUS Plus.

Οι εννέα εταίροι που συμμετέχουν στην κοινοπραξία EU-CONEXUS Plus είναι το Rochelle Université (Γαλλία), το Γεωπονικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (Ελλάδα), το Technical University of Civil Engineering Bucharest (Ρουμανία), το Klaipeda University (Λιθουανία), το Universidad Catolica de Valencia “San Vicente Martir” (Ισπανία) και το University of Zadar (Κροατία), το Waterford Institute of Technology (Ιρλανδία) και το University of Rostock (Γερμανία) και το Πανεπιστήμιο Frederick (Κύπρος).
