European Higher Education Sector Scoreboard and the future of monitoring higher education policy

January 21 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

A 30 January conference is kicking off the new scoreboard, which uses data visualisation to provide comprehensive insights into higher education systems across Europe.

A new era of monitoring higher education systems

The European Higher Education Sector Scoreboard (EHESS) is looking to be a key resource within the European Higher Education Sector Observatory (EHESO).

It enables policy experts, researchers and national authorities to explore and compare higher education systems across the EU and beyond. It can become a cornerstone for monitoring policy developments within the European Education Area.

Join the kick off

EHESO is holding a kick-off event for the new scoreboard. The hybrid (in person / online) event will be held 30 January in Brussels. Policy experts, researchers, national authorities and other interested parties are invited to attend.

The event is titled “Learning from the first edition of the European Higher Education Sector Scoreboard and looking at the Future of EHESO”.

About EHESO

EHESO is an Erasmus+ funded centralised platform on higher education sector data.

It aims to become a one-stop-shop for policymakers, stakeholders, and researchers, enabling them to track progress, identify challenges, and formulate evidence-based strategies for improving higher education systems.

About the European Higher Education Sector Scoreboard

The new scoreboard organises data around five major themes tied to EU higher education objectives:

  • strengthening transnational cooperation in education, research, and innovation
  • advancing EU values such as autonomy, academic freedom, gender equality, and inclusiveness
  • building future-proof skills and fostering collaboration with industrial ecosystems
  • enhancing international cooperation in education and research
  • analysing key context indicators of higher education systems

The first edition integrates data from trusted sources such as Eurostat, the European Tertiary Education Register (ETER), and U-Multirank. It offers insights into trends from 2015 to 2022 across 38 countries, including EU countries, EEA countries, candidate countries and the UK.

Features

  • thematic view for cross-country comparisons
  • country pages with detailed, localised insights

The approach of comparing themes with countries supports the EU’s ambition to align national systems with key objectives of the European Education Area.

Availability

The new scoreboard will be available on the National Policies Platform, a project run by the European Education and Culture Executive Agency (EACEA).
