City and Climate Change (6th Cycle of the Environment Lecture Series)
April 16 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
On Tuesday 16 April 2024, an open hybrid lecture entitled “City and Climate Change” will be held, with Dr. Konstantinos Kartalis, Professor of Environmental and Climate Physics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The lecture is part of the 6th Cycle of the Series of Specialised Lectures on Chemical Engineering – Environmental Engineering and Environmental Management, organised by the Postgraduate Programme “Environmental Management and Protection” and the Laboratory of Chemical and Sustainability Engineering of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC). The event will take place at 18:00 p.m. at the Faculty of Science and Applied Sciences Building (89 Giannou Kranidiotis Avenue, 2231 Latsia, Nicosia) and will be simultaneously webcast via the teleconferencing tools of the AUCY at https://tinyurl.com/bddunxsp. The Lecture Series is supported by the Office of the Environment Commissioner.
The presentation will examine the threefold relationship between cities and climate change: (a) the contribution of cities to greenhouse gas emissions; (b) the impact of climate change on cities; and (c) the impact of urban morphology, urban materials and urban functions on the urban environment, e.g. in terms of thermal conditions. In addition, Professor Kartalis will present results of recent research studies regarding the formulation of climate change mitigation plans and adaptation to its impacts.
