European University Cyprus announces the approval of its application for the establishment of a UNESCO Chair in Disaster Risk Reduction and Societal Safety in the South Eastern Mediterranean. This prestigious Chair will be led by George Boustras, Professor in Risk Assessment at European University Cyprus.
The UNESCO Chair aims to serve as a regional hub for scientific research, innovation, and policy engagement in disaster risk reduction and societal safety. By fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, it seeks to enhance scientific knowledge and translate research findings into actionable policies that strengthen resilience in the region.
During its initial four-year term, the Chair will focus on:
- High-impact researchresulting in scientific publications and policy reports
- Collaboration with global UNESCO Chairs and distinguished visiting scholars
- Public lectures and training programmes to build capacity in disaster risk management
- Engagement with policymakers and stakeholders to influence evidence-based decision-making
- Participatory events and co-creation initiatives to develop innovative solutions
Furthermore, the UNESCO Chair in Disaster Risk Reduction and Societal Safety in the South Eastern Mediterranean will significantly reinforce and expand the work of CERIDES – Excellence in Innovation and Technology, a research centre at European University Cyprus renowned for its contributions to Horizon Europe projects and cutting-edge research in risk assessment and crisis management.
