By 28 September 2022, the European Commission’s European Innovation Council (EIC) received 287 proposals for the second EIC Transition cut-off in 2022. The number of proposals received show an increasing interest, considering the 165 submissions of the first 2022 cut-off. For both EIC Transition Open and EIC Transition Challenges Calls, the top four countries participants are Spain, Italy, Germany and France.
EIC Transition Open
236 proposals, with applicants from 33 countries, have been submitted for the EIC Transition Open Call. Out of these, 157 proposals were considered eligible, requesting a total grant contribution of €371.7 million.
EIC Transition Open is an open funding scheme without any thematic priorities, for projects that have already reached the experimental proof of concept in laboratory. These projects should aim to further mature and validate their technologies in the lab and in relevant application environments to develop market/business readiness, possibly including iterative learning processes based on early customer or user feedback.
EIC Transition Challenges
For EIC Transition Challenges call, with three thematic priorities, the Commission received 51 applications from 19 countries:
- 13 for the “Green digital devices for the future” challenge,
- 27 for the “Process and system integration of clean energy technologies” challenge
- 11 for the “RNA-based therapies and diagnostics for complex or rare genetic diseases” challenge.
24 proposals are eligible, requesting altogether €58.6 million.
The EIC Transition “Green digital devices for the future” challenge is specifically addressed to demonstrate novel digital devices and/or architectures that have a clear and quantifiable advantage with respect to energy efficiency and aims at solving issues related to use of non-critical and non-toxic raw materials.
The EIC Transition “Process and system integration of clean energy technologies” challenge finances projects that develop energy technologies, including renewable fuels. They aim to facilitate the selection of different and appropriate applications, and integration of these sustainable technologies into existing and new energy systems and devices, both at component, process or at infrastructure level.
The EIC “Transition RNA-based therapies and diagnostics for complex or rare genetic diseases” challenge finances novel technological solutions leading to more effective and safer RNA delivery methods applicable to a wide range of non-infectious diseases.
