The EU-funded project will support local implementation projects in 9 cities and regions, showing how data spaces can benefit urban mobility by enabling improved services and policymaking.
DeployEMDS, a deployment action co-funded by the EU, started in November 2023. The project marks a key step forward in the European Union’s journey towards the creation of a common data space, facilitating data access and sharing, in the mobility sector. It aims to unite data providers and users by developing common building blocks and practical applications.
This initiative under the Digital Europe Programme brings together a diverse and interdisciplinary consortium of 38 members and 7 associated partners from 11 different member states. This three-year project is set to run until the end of October 2026, with EU funding of around 8 million.
In line with the European data strategy and the Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, deployEMDS will help unlock the potential of data to support a more sustainable and efficient urban mobility. The project’s main objective is to enable data sharing and reuse, contributing to the realisation of a common European mobility data space. Building on the results of the preparatory action PrepDSpace4Mobility, deployEMDS will deploy an operational data space alongside common governance mechanisms.
The project will support implementation projects in 9 cities and regions, addressing over 20 use cases related to traffic management, data-driven policymaking and multimodal mobility. They will actively contribute to the development of innovative services and applications and to improve local transport policies.
For instance, in Stockholm, a specific use case will focus on improving the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and air quality. The deployment aims to enable digital monitoring of low emission zones, with a particular emphasis on air quality and compliance in one of the city’s main streets.
In Budapest, another use case will transform the current route planning system into a multimodal one by integrating data from various shared transport operators in the city’s public transport applications. A particular emphasis will be placed on ensuring accessibility for persons with reduced mobility.
Meanwhile in Sofia, deployEMDS is set to deploy a multimodal mobility solution with the objective of significantly lowering carbon emissions. Through heightened situational awareness and the promotion of more sustainable modes of transportation, such as public transportation, e-scooters, e-bikes, and shared mobility, the project aspires to initiate a shift towards greener commuting practises.
By tailoring each use case to the unique challenges faced by each city and region and achieving tangible outcomes, the project will demonstrate the transformative potential of the data space concept. It will show how the common European mobility data space can help address local needs while supporting EU digital sovereignty and sustainable mobility across Europe. Stakeholders beyond the project are encouraged to engage to learn, share experience and get inspired. Furthermore, the project has published its inception report, which will be available for access on the project’s website.
