Cyprus University of Technology: European University of Technology (EUt+) intervenes in the debate on foreign language curricula

The “European Universities of Technology” (EUt+) alliance, in which CUT participates along with 8 other European universities from 8 different countries (Cyprus, Germany, France, Italy, Latvia, Romania, Bulgaria, Bulgaria, Ireland, Spain, Latvia, Germany, Ireland), issued a statement on the public dialogue on the offer of study programmes by public universities in Cyprus in languages other than Greek.

The EUt+ alliance, which is receiving €14.4 million in funding, is part of the European Commission’s wider €1.1 billion investment in the European Universities Initiative over the period 2021-2027, supporting 64 alliances involving more than 560 universities.

In the context of the processes, the EUt+ leadership was informed of the ongoing debate in Cyprus regarding the offer by public universities of study programmes in other EU languages than Greek, which may affect the strategy for the development of European degrees.

The Secretary General of the Alliance, in an official statement, said that EUt+ is considered by the European Commission as a pioneering alliance for the creation of European Universities. He underlined EUt+’s commitment to European principles for the creation of European degrees at undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level, with a student-centred approach and respect for multilingualism.

While welcoming the attitude and support of the Cypriot Minister of Education towards the European perspective, he expressed concern about the developments and called on all stakeholders to demonstrate a positive attitude by removing obstacles to the promotion of the creation of European degrees. He pointed out that any failure of one of the nine partner universities to meet its obligations would seriously affect the contractual obligations of the alliance towards the European Commission, with potentially significant financial implications.

The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), as part of its contractual obligations as a partner in the European University of Technology Alliance (EUt+), is coordinating the development of a joint undergraduate curriculum in the broader field of sustainable development in English.
