Language proficiency in healthcare is vital to providing quality care to patients from different cultural backgrounds. Effective communication between healthcare professionals and patients is essential for the proper diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Healthcare professionals must be able to communicate with patients in their native language or at least have a basic understanding of at least one second language.
The shortage of skilled healthcare workers poses a critical challenge. In the future, the need for skilled health workers will increase even more due to demographic change. In this context, new skills, including language competences, are required for healthcare workers to overcome language barriers and ensure they provide the best possible care to their patients. To address this challenge, the DRFLEMP project (Digital Reality for Foreign Language Education of Medical Professionals) leverages Mixed Reality (MR) to bridge the gap between language learning and real-world communication needs in healthcare. By combining Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), learners can engage in interactive language activities in simulated health environments. By incorporating speech recognition applications, supported by artificial intelligence, the mixed reality application DRFLEMP facilitates communication and the development of language skills.
Key outputs of the project include, among others, a list of best practises, the development of mixed reality simulation scenarios, the AI-enhanced mixed reality application, two mixed reality learning modules as well as virtual and mixed reality training course. We invite you to view the video presentation of the developed prototype on YouTube (https://youtu.be/IiIkkEycYpE).
The DRFLEMP project, funded by Erasmus+, is completed on 29 February 2024. The final Transnational Meeting of the DRFLEMP project took place at INTAMT offices in Dusseldorf, Germany on 21 February 2024. The final meeting of the project was followed by the conference “Modern technologies against labour shortages”, which was open to the public with participants who attended on-site and online. The consortium presented an overview of the project, the partners involved and the results achieved. You can download the presentations from the DRFLEMP conference from here.
