The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) emerged as the big winner of this year’s all-Cypriot environmental awards for organizations and businesses co-organised by the Cyprus Center for Environmental Research and Education (CYCERE) and the Office of the Environment Commissioner.

CUT won the Golden Protector of the Environment Award in the Organisations and Enterprises category as well as the “Golden Cedar” special honor, after managing to collect the highest score from all nominations in all categories.

The winner of the special distinction was announced by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Costas Kadis during last night’s award ceremony at the Presidential Palace. The awards were presented by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Nicos Anastasiadis.

On behalf of CUT, the President of the University Council, Dr. Christos Chomatas, received the award and the honorary distinction.

In his short greeting, Dr. Chomatas said that “the Cyprus University of Technology approaches environmental issues holistically and collectively. He is concerned about future generations and tries to focus on the issues they will face. All this is done methodically and as a team. I want to thank all the contributors of the University for their cooperation, their commitment, as well as the sense of responsibility that they possess. Their actions led to the pleasant event of receiving this important distinction for our University today.”

The evaluation of the candidate projects was done by a Scientific Evaluation Committee in the presence of the Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Clelia Vassiliou, and representatives of all cooperating agencies.

The event was attended, on behalf of CUT, by the Rector of the University, Professor Panagiotis Zafiris, the Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Dr. Vyridis Ioannis, the Head of the Communication, Promotion and Internationalisation Service, Dr. Marinos Voukis, the Senior Officer of the Management Service Property Mr. Neophytos Loukaidis and the Coordinator of the Office of Environmental Policy (Sustainability Office), Mr. Andreas Dionysiou.  

The Gold Protector of the Gold metal Environment is awarded to the organization / company that manages environmental issues as an integral part of its business policy, establishing practices and actions that preserve the natural environment. In addition, it reduces the consumption of natural resources through the adoption of appropriate optimal techniques, thus contributing to sustainable development. It also undertakes actions for environmental upgrading of its premises and in the context of its social responsibility it strengthens in various ways the local environmental bodies.

As part of the event, a short video showing the important work carried out by CUT in the field of sustainable development and environmental protection was shown.
