The Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth (MoESY) announces Cyprus’s participation in the European project SAFETeen – a significant initiative aimed at preventing road accidents among young people. Road accidents are one of the leading causes of death and serious injury among young people in Cyprus and across Europe. The need for prevention, education, and the development of responsible behaviour on the road is more pressing today than ever before. Within this framework, the MoESY underlines the particular importance of Cyprus’s participation in the European project SAFETeen, which is funded by Erasmus+ and coordinated by the Hellenic Mediterranean University (Greece).
The project aims to strengthen learning and skills development among secondary school pupils, with the objective of improving risk awareness and promoting balanced decision-making during travel and daily journeys. This goal is achieved through the use of innovative pedagogical tools and digital technology (ICT) interventions, tailored to the developmental needs of adolescents and the diverse social contexts in which they live. Cyprus is represented in the project by the Health Education (Home Economics) Inspectorate of the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth (MoESY), which is also responsible for implementing the programme at national level. Through the participation of MoESY officers in SAFETeen, existing efforts in the field of road safety are reinforced, both in terms of training and in the dissemination of good practices within schools.
As part of the programme’s implementation, a teacher training course on the application of SAFETeen will be held on 17–19 September 2025 at Frederick University in Nicosia, alongside the project’s regular partners’ coordination meeting. The opening ceremony will take place on 17 September 2025 at 9:00 a.m. at Frederick University, Nicosia.
The SAFETeen Project: “Building Skills for Enhancing Hazard Perception and Safe Decision-Making among Teenagers (Road Safety)” is being implemented in collaboration with eight (8) organisations:
- Hellenic Mediterranean University (Greece) – Coordinator
- Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH) (Greece)
- University of Valencia (Spain)
- Regional Education Office of Tuscany (Italy)
- Regional Directorate of Education of Crete (Greece)
- University of Turku (Finland)
- Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth (Cyprus)
- Frederick University (Cyprus)
AFETeen represents an important European initiative for promoting the safety, health and well-being of young people. Through teacher training and the development of pedagogical tools, it makes a substantial contribution to fostering a school culture that enhances responsibility, psychosocial empowerment, and the cultivation of life skills. The Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth reaffirms its commitment to implementing educational innovations that nurture the responsible, empowered, and active citizens of tomorrow.
