University of Nicosia: UNIC Medical School launches €4M Horizon Europe project to integrate HIV and NCD care across four countries

On 2 and 3 July, the University of Nicosia Medical School hosted the kick-off meeting for HIVE, a €4 million Horizon Europe research project coordinated by UNIC and involving 15 international partners. The initiative, officially titled ‘Enhancing Multiple Long-Term Conditions (MLTC) management for HIV populations through Implementation research, evidence-based interventions, and integration of NCD care in LMIC contexts with a focus on Viability and Equity’, is set to run through 2028.

HIVE builds on a digital health tool developed by Columbia University and aims to expand and adapt it for use across four pilot countries – Kenya, Kazakhstan, Greece, and Malta. The project focuses on improving care for people living with HIV (PLWH) by supporting the self-management of multiple long-term conditions and embedding non-communicable disease (NCD) care and psychosocial counselling into HIV clinic settings. The kick-off event brought together academic, public health, and clinical partners for two days of intensive planning, coordination, and co-creation.

Following the collaborative sessions, Dr Eleni Tolma, Head of the Department of Primary Care and Population Health and HIVE’s Principal Investigator and Project Coordinator, reflected on the launch: ‘We are proud to lead such a timely and ambitious effort. The launch was a true reflection of the collaborative spirit driving this project – uniting teams across sectors and geographies in the shared mission of improving equity in chronic care’.

The meeting concluded with agreement on project governance, upcoming research milestones, and dissemination goals. Participants joined both in-person and online, and team photos were taken at the end of each day to mark the start of this multi-country collaboration.
