Seminar of the Department of Civil Engineering on “The effect of swelling soils on the built environment”
Within the frame of its educational seminars and talks, the Department of Civil Engineering has invited esteemed civil engineer Dr. Kyriakos Kyrou, geotechnical engineer and former Director of the Water Development Department, for a presentation on “The effect of swelling soils on the built environment”.
Dr. Kyrou is a highly regarded, well known specialist in the field of geotechnical engineering with many years of experience in large scale projects. He has also given presentations at universities and institutions on the topic and has published his work in journals and conferences.
The presentation was both of theoretical and practical nature with example case studies from Cyprus and abroad. Dr. Kyrou successfully transferred his knowledge and passion for research to the students who were very involved and much interested in the topic. The lecture was followed by several questions and a fruitful discussion.
Overall, the presentation proved to be a deeply informative and thought-provoking experience. Civil Engineering students from all years participated in the seminar, as well as postgraduate students of the Department.
Invited lectures and seminars by practicing civil engineers are major elements of the Civil Engineering degree at Frederick University and are frequently organised by the Department to strengthen student knowledge and interest in a variety of areas within the Civil Engineering profession.
