Open University of Cyprus: European Defence Agency publication “Shaping the Future: energy transition in the Defence Sector” with academics and researchers of the OUC

At a time of intense environmental and geopolitical challenges, the interconnection of issues related to climate change, energy and defence is emerging as a critical area of research. The publication “Shaping the Future: energy transition in the Defence Sector”, published by the European Defence Agency, is the product of co-editing by Dr Konstantinos Hadjisavvas, Maja Kuzel, Associate Professor Antonis A. Zorpa, Director of the Postgraduate Programme “Environmental Sustainability Engineering” of the Open University of Cyprus (OUC), Dr Irene Voukkali, Lecturer in the same Programme and Dr Iliana Papamichael, researcher at the Laboratory of Chemical and Sustainability Engineering of OUC. This publication is a valuable tool for policy makers, defence, security and energy professionals, researchers in these fields, and industry.

The publication offers in-depth analysis of key aspects of the energy transition in the defence sector, such as energy efficiency, green procurement, energy storage systems, the coexistence of renewable energy sources with defence systems, as well as advanced methodologies such as Life Cycle Assessment, and strategic directions from actors such as the European Defence Agency, the European Commission, national ministries of defence, as well as key players from industry and academia. In addition, it presents pioneering initiatives, such as the EU Competence Centre on Climate Change, Security, and Defence and the EDESEP platform, which aim to enhance cooperation, standardise practices and accelerate the energy transition in the defence sector.
