University of Cyprus: Cyprus is represented in the list of the world’s most influential scientists by Professor Despo Fatta-Kassinou of the University of Cyprus

The published list of scientists with the greatest research impact worldwide includes Professor Despo Fatta-Kassinou, Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Cyprus. Dr Fatta-Kassinou is the only representative of the country on the Clarivate list and the only woman in Greece and Cyprus.

As a highly cited researcher, Dr Fatta-Kasinou, has demonstrated significant and broad influence in her field of research. The Highly Cited Researchers 2024 list includes a total of 6,636 researchers from research centres and academic institutions in 59 countries. Researchers are authors of publications that are evaluated by the number of times they are cited, i.e. how many times other scientists cite these publications. These publications are among the 1% with the highest number of citations over the last decade. The list draws on data from the Web of Science database, analysed by experts at the Clarivate Institute for Scientific Information. It is important to note that of the global population of scientists, the number of highly cited researchers is 1 in 1,000.

David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at Clarivate’s Institute for Scientific Information, said: “The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates outstanding individual researchers whose significant and broad influence in their fields translates into the impact they have on the research community. Their groundbreaking innovations contribute to a healthier, more sustainable and safer world. The achievements of these researchers strengthen the foundation of excellence and innovation that drives societal progress.”

Which countries are the most influential researchers from?

The US is represented by 2,507 researchers, which represents 36.4% of the total, while China is represented by 1,405 researchers, which represents 20.4% of the global total. This is followed by the UK with 563 scientists, Germany with 332, Australia with 313, Canada with 206, the Netherlands with 185, Hong Kong with 134, France with 126, and Singapore with 108.

Dr Despo Fatta-Kassinou

Dr Fatta-Kassinou has been honoured in the past for her scientific activity with several awards, including the Research Award from the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation and the SETAC Europe-Noack Laboratorien Outstanding Science Career Award.

Her scientific research has contributed to the understanding of advanced (photo)oxidation processes for the treatment of water and municipal wastewater as well as other advanced treatment processes, aiming at the safe final disposal of wastewater in the environment and its reuse. Her research contributes to the understanding of the behaviour of contaminants of emerging interest including antibiotic-resistant bacteria, genes and transgenic resistance transgenes during the implementation of treatment and disinfection processes.

More than 60 students have carried out their research to date in the scientific group at postgraduate and PhD level. She has served as Chair of the Scientific and Technological Advisory Committee of the Joint Water Programming of the European Union (2015-2019) and chairs the Scientific Advisory Committee of the African Centre of Excellence in Water and Environment Research (ACEWATER). She is a member of the 8-member Independent Expert Committee of the National Centre for Research on Antimicrobial Resistance in Agriculture, Food and Environment (SAAFE) in Australia, and a member of the International Scientific Committee of OneWater – Eau Bien Commun, which is the National Water Research Funding Programme of France (CNRS-BRGM-INRAE). To date, she has coordinated a large number of research projects both national and European with a total budget of more than 14.6 million Euros.

She has more than 194 publications in scientific journals (h-index:86, Citations:35384, Google Scholar). She is Executive Editor of the international scientific journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering (Elsevier, IF 7.4), Editor of Water Research (Elsevier, IF 11.4) and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Current Opinion in Chemical Engineering (Elsevier, IF 8). She has given a large number of lectures and talks in various countries around the world and represents Cyprus in various committees abroad.
