Commission launches new course for journalists to boost education on EU and cohesion policy

The Commission, together with six European universities and two journalists’ associations, launched the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) entitled ‘Covering Cohesion Policy in Europe’. Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, opened the event via video message. The course aims to fill the gaps in journalism education and promote knowledge about cohesion policy and its many benefits for European regions and cities. It is aimed at journalism students, professionals and anyone interested in European affairs.

Ahead of the event, the Commissioner said: “The MOOC brings the world of cohesion policy to a classroom near you. It is a great example of pan-European cooperation between universities and shows what can be achieved when we work together. I hope that many journalism students will follow the course and feel inspired to talk about the role of cohesion policy for long-term, sustainable and balanced growth across the EU.”

In 2022, the Commission launched a €1 million call for proposals to create a course focused on cohesion policy. The winning proposal was developed by a consortium of institutions, including the Technical University of Dortmund (Germany), the University of Porto (Portugal), the University of Wrocław (Poland), Babeș-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca (Romania), the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece) and the AP University of Antwerp (Belgium), as well as several journalists’ organisations. The MOOC is a free and interactive online learning platform available in all EU languages. It covers key areas such as EU governance, cohesion policy, tools available to find data on the EU, cross-border reporting and digital journalism. Structured in 14 modules, the course lasts for a full semester.
