The first PS-U-GO training action, which focuses on theories, models, tools and practices on participatory and collaborative approaches for the regeneration of public spaces, took place in Brussels.
From 25 to 27 September, academics, research staff, PS-U-GO NGO representatives, and students from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) partners of the research project met at Urban Foxes’ urban workshop space, TRACK, located in Brussels’ North Station. Participants discussed and laid the foundations for a common framework around community engagement and participatory approaches to the regeneration of public spaces through the creation of Urban Labs (ULLs) as educational spaces. The Urban Labs (ULLs) to be developed in 4 European cities aim to engage stakeholders from the quadrilateral helix to experiment and test ideas and solutions to urban challenges.
The meeting started with a tour of TRACK, an innovative space that encourages creative and social partnerships. The Urban Foxes team shared the story of how the space was designed and maintained using recycled materials, flexible design, and partnerships between for-profit and non-profit organizations, with a focus on neighborhood revitalization and engaging local youth. Participants then took a digital journey through the projects of collaborating partners across Europe. They explored the Madonie region in Italy with PUSH, where a multifunctional community space is being developed. CNR-IRISS presented its efforts to transform the Lido Pola area, an industrial zone, into a public space through community engagement. The SURF laboratory of the University of Cyprus presented its annual student projects, carried out in the framework of the co-creation studio, which activate local neighbourhoods, while in Germany, BTU is creating a new student-run space in Cottbus by reusing a former shopping centre. The presentations revealed common challenges and visions in different regions, setting the stage for the upcoming PS-U-GO Urban Labs (ULLs).
On the second day, the training continued with an in-depth analysis of the urban transformation of Brussels, led by local residents and activists. The Urban Foxes highlighted community-led efforts to revitalise the city centre. Participants also learned about the Academy of Urban Action’s thematic urban workshop focusing on using the city as a space for youth inclusion and activism. The students from the University of Cyprus and BTU tried out some of the AUA tools during an urban exploration, sharing their thoughts with the SF:ius team – responsible for the educational field actions.
The last day included a fishbowl-style session where students led the discussion on building trust and inclusion in the Urban Labs. This collaborative exchange of ideas aimed to formulate a shared manifesto of values for PS-U-GO Urban Labs, setting a strong foundation for future activities.
