EU health research projects using AI to improve cancer treatment and patients’ quality of life

Research and innovation on cancer has been and remains a top priority for the EU.

As the European Week Against Cancer continues, here’s a closer look at projects funded under the Horizon 2020 programme that are using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve cancer treatment.

QUALITOP

The project Monitoring multidimensional aspects of QUAlity of Life after cancer ImmunoTherapy – an Open smart digital Platform for personalized prevention and patient management (QUALITOP) aims to develop an open digital platform for immunotherapy in the EU. The platform will help identify the determinants of patients’ health status, define patient profiles, and provide real-time recommendations.

ASCAPE

Artificial intelligence Supporting CAncer Patients across Europe (ASCAPE) is creating an open AI infrastructure for hospitals and research institutions. The digital infrastructure will provide services such as intelligent interventions for physiological and psychological support, improved patient and family counselling, early diagnosis and forecasts, identification of disease trajectories and relapse. The project is focusing the training of the AI on breast and prostate cancer.

PANCAIM

Pancreatic cancer AI for genomics and personalized Medicine (PANCAIM) aims to improve personalised medicine of pancreatic cancer using existing genomic and clinical data. The project is using artificial intelligence (AI) to integrate genomics and imaging phenomics. This will generate breakthrough knowledge on pancreatic cancer biology and improve treatment outcomes.

CLARIFY

At least one quarter of persons with a history of cancer report long-term deterioration of their health and ensuring quality of life of cancer survivors remains a challenge. The Cancer Long Survivors Artificial Intelligence Follow Up (CLARIFY) project is working at identifying and determining the factors that predict poor health status in patients at the end of oncological treatment. Specifically, it is collecting data about survivors from breast, lung and lymphoma cancer and building new models with the support of big data and artificial intelligence techniques. The discovery of these factors will enable health professionals to organise care accordingly and encourage healthy lifestyle behaviours, thus increasing adherence.

BACKGROUND

Horizon Europe is the research and innovation programme of the EU for the period 2021-2027. The aims of Cluster 1 ‘Health’ include improving and protecting the health and wellbeing of citizens of all ages by generating new knowledge, developing innovative solutions and integrating a gender perspective to prevent, diagnose, monitor, treat and cure diseases.

Horizon 2020 (H2020) was the EU’s multiannual funding programme between 2014 and 2020.
