In recognition of noteworthy strides towards gender equality carried out by academic and research organisations, the European Commission is delighted to announce the winners of the EU Award for Gender Equality Champions:
- Trinity College Dublin, from Ireland, as a Sustainable Gender Equality Champion.
- Karolinska Institutet,from Sweden, as a Sustainable Gender Equality Champion.
- Maynooth University, from Ireland, as a Newcomer Gender Equality Champion.
- South East Technological University, from Ireland, as an Inclusive Gender Equality Champion.
The awards are given across the categories listed above, with each winner receiving a prize of €100,000.

Promoting and ensuring gender-equal and safe working environments are a priority for the European Research Area. Today, we are rewarding EU Gender Equality champions, and thanking them to be an inspiration to other organisations to close the gender gap. Congratulations to our winners!
The award ceremony was chaired by Commissioner Mariya Gabriel and Peter Dröll, Director in the Directorate-General for Research and Innovation and it was organized in the framework of the first EU Female Founders Forum Summit.
Background
The EU Award for Gender Equality Champions was created under Horizon Europe to:
- complement and boost the requirement for higher education and research organisations applying to Horizon Europe to have in place a Gender Equality Plan (GEP) as an eligibility criterion
- be a tool to advance inclusive gender equality plans and policies in the framework of the new European Research Area (ERA) policy agenda
- act as an enabler for the transformation agenda for universities set in the new ERA, and in line with the new European Strategy for Universities
The prize aims to raise public awareness of the importance of addressing gender equality through institutional change, but also the necessity of a high degree of commitment to the inclusive GEPs implementation.
It is also intended to create a community of champions that can inspire other academic and research organisations to become gender equality champions themselves.
Designed by the European Commission (DG Research and Innovation), the prize is managed by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) and its winners are selected by an independent expert jury for each prize category.
